A Nolan Gorman call-up could be coming sooner than expected for the St. Louis Cardinals as he tears up Triple-A, but it’s not imminent.
Nolan Gorman is going to get called up by the St. Louis Cardinals at some point early this season. When that call comes is anyone’s guess, but he’s expected to make his long awaited debut at some point before the All-Star break.
And with the way Gorman is starting the minor-league season, his call-up could come even sooner than expected. Just check out these numbers: .367/.424//767 with four home runs in eight games.
Sure, the Cardinals’ big-league infield picture will become clouded when Gorman is eventually called up. It would mean less time for Tommy Edman and Paul DeJong, with there being a possibility that Edman sees time at shortstop. But calling up Gorman, a consensus top-2 prospect, would give them four 30+ homer caliber bats in the lineup in addition to Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado and Tyler O’Neill.
It’s worth noting, however, that Gorman did not have a very strong spring training, as he hit a mere .125/.125/.125 with no home runs, though that was limited to only 16 at-bats. But the argument can be made that he needs to spend a bit more time in the minors before being called up to the big leagues.
But it’s becoming increasingly difficult to wait much longer to make that call. The Cardinals already view their lineup as one of the most prolific (and also underrated units) in the majors. Just imagine what it looks like with Gorman. The possibilities are endless and the upside is enormous.
We’re not officially on the “Nolan Gorman call-up” watch. But it’s certainly getting closer, and it wouldn’t be a surprise that he gets that call well in advance of the All-Star break if he continues this torrid stretch in Triple-A.
