Ranking the St. Louis Cardinals modern jerseys, from worst to best
The St. Louis Cardinals have one of the best collections of jerseys in Major League Baseball. How do the jerseys stack up against one another?
When watching your favorite team for two-thirds of the year, it cannot be overlooked how fun it is to see the team win AND look good while doing it. Call us homers, but most St. Louis Cardinals fans would agree that the team has some of the best uniforms in the league. In fact, Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report ranked the Cardinals home/away combo (not including alternate uniforms) the best set of uniforms in baseball.
But when ranking all five of the current jerseys for the club, how do they stack up when up against each other? Take a look at my rankings and let us know in the comments how you would rank yours.
Let’s dive in.
5. Gray Road
Taking the last spot on the list, the Cardinals away jersey is actually one of my favorite gray jerseys in all of baseball.
Personal preference, grey is not my typical favorite set of uniforms for any team, but the way that the Cardinals red hats and birds on the bat contrast with the grey makes them really appealing. There has been some debate among fans as to whether or not the red caps should be replaced by the navy caps, which may be a nice change of pace for this uniform set.
4. Cream Alternate Home
This may be a bit of a controversial placement, as I do really enjoy these jerseys. First, the cream look is a nice change of pace from the classic white that the club wears in their other home games. The jersey pays homage to many of the classic uniforms that the team has, which is a nice touch for a club which such a storied history.
My favorite part of the jersey is how it replaces the “Cardinals” chest logo with “St. Louis.” I personally love when home alternates incorporate part of the city that they represent, and this is a simple yet great way of doing so.
3. Red Alternate
The red alternate uniform look is actually a huge missed opportunity from the ballclub. Red is far and away the color you would associate the most with the Cardinals, yet they have not introduced a red jersey to use in the regular season. A lot of clubs have an alternate that can be used at both home and on the road, and I think now is the time for the Cardinals to do the same.
I actually enjoy the red jersey that they primarily use during spring training. Cardinals red is such a nice color, and really pops on your screen when watching them in action. They pair really well with both the white and gray pants, and the white outline of the logo makes the “Cardinals” logo still stand out.
They could get really creative with a new, regular season edition of a red jersey. One idea would be to add navy coloration down the side of the jerseys, or adding some kind of design to the sleeves. Either way, it’d be cool to see the club utilize these as a home/away alternate jersey, or introduce a new version of this design.
2. Light Blue Road Alternate
The reintroduction of the classic light blue road uniform before the 2019 season was a huge hit for Cardinals fans.
Made popular during their run in the late 70s into the mid 80s, the Cardinals brought back the jerseys in their full glory, back with the iconic blue pants and wearing them during Saturday road outings. Like the cream jerseys though, the club replaced the “Cardinals” chest logo with “St. Louis”, which is a nice difference from the classic light blue jerseys that fans grew to love.
If anyone doubts the popularity of these uniforms, just take a look out in the crowd during St. Louis home games over the last few seasons. Before 2019, red was the overwhelming color in the seats, but now there are thousands of fans that enter the stadium rocking the new light blue look. Hopefully this means the club will keep them around for decades to come.
1. White Home
There is nothing quite like the home jerseys that the Cardinals rock today. The clean, white jerseys running onto the field before first pitch bring chills to any St. Louis fan, and bring back memories National Pennants and Word Series Championships.
Out of all of the uniforms, the red pops the most when paired with the bright white jerseys. The iconic birds on the bat really shines here, and will remain a staple of Cardinal baseball for decades to come.
