Stubby Clapp

He’s currently the club’s first base coach and has been a candidate for managerial roles around the majors. While it’s unclear if he was up for the role filled by Oliver Marmol, Stubby Clapp is certainly a legend in the St. Louis Cardinals system. He would be an excellent bench coach as well.

Clapp was the Memphis Redbirds manager when they won the 2017 and 2018 PCL championships. Additionally, in 2018, the Redbirds were AAA champions.

Many of the players he managed in Memphis are now with the club in St. Louis. He knows the guys. He knows how to communicate with them. He’s been on this coaching staff and knows how to communicate with them.

It’s apparent that communication will be key on Marmol’s team, Clapp has an edge in this department. Then again, the Cardinals and Clapp may go for comfort and keep the continuity going with Clapp staying in his role as first base coach.
