Former St. Louis Cardinals reliever Jason Motte is taking on a new role off of the baseball field with the University of Memphis.

His official title will be Baseball Director Of Player Development with the Tigers. Jason Motte spent six seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, racking up 54 saves and an FIP of 3.55. After that he bounced around a few teams. He even returned to the organization on a minor league deal earlier in the year.

The Cardinals selected Motte in the 19th round back in 2003 as a catcher. After a couple season of not so spectacular performances with the bat, he transitioned to the mound. It worked out well, as he went on to save 42 games in a season.

Motte And Memphis

The Michigan native went to high school in New York, and then Iona College. There is no direct to Memphis, or Tennessee. But according to the announcement, he would train at the Tigers facilities in the offseason. Motte tweeted out his excitement for the next step in his career.

Motte’s Career

He brings a plethora of experience to his new position. Motte has a World Series ring from 2011 with St. Louis Cardinals. After leaving the Redbirds in 2014, he moved on to play for the Rockies, Braves, and Cubs. Though the latter should not be held against him.

His 444 games in the majors, along with growing as a both a catcher and a pitcher, gives him a lot to bring to his new position.

Maybe Motte will be able to aid in developing the next Dan Uggla, or better. In the 2018 draft, the Tigers produced second round pick of the Kansas City Royals, Jonathan Bowlan. They also produced 31st round pick Riley Cabral, and 40th rounder Tyler Webb. Two pitchers, and Webb is a shortstop. With the pitching talent, Motte can do some good.

The school believes he can make an impact from the start. With his experience, there is little doubt that he will. Best of luck to Jason. And from all of us at Redbird Rants, congratulations!
