St. Louis Cardinals Top Prospect Alex Reyes Suspended 50 Games

Well, these are high times for St. Louis Cardinals uber prospect Alex Reyes. And not the good kind. (Well, I guess that depends on who you ask …). From the Fox 2 post:

"St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Alex Reyes has been suspended for 50 games under baseball’s minor league drug program following a second positive test for a drug of abuse.Reyes had been with the Surprise Saguaros of the Arizona Fall League and will miss the rest of the AFL season, the commissioner’s office said Monday."

As this thing unfolds on Twitter, we’re learning that Reyes got caught with marijuana. This, from a recent post on Baseball America:

"Reyes was suspended without pay for testing positive for the second time for a drug of abuse, Credit: Mark Harrell/Springfield Cardinalsmeaning recreational drugs rather than performance-enhancing drugs. In a statement, Reyes admitted he tested positive for marijuana. “I take full responsibility for my actions and apologize for disappointing my family, friends, teammates and the St. Louis Cardinals organization. I acknowledge my inappropriate behavior and will accept the consequences.”"

Reyes is now the third prospect in the Arizona Fall League to get a suspension. Three days ago, Detroit

Tigers 23-year-old infield prospect JaCoby Jones, who the Pittsburgh Pirates traded at the deadline for reliever Joakim Soria.

Reyes, however, is by far the highest profile of the trio (Texas Rangers second baseman Evan Van Hoosier is the other one), and his departure from the league on Saturday got everyone’s attention. He was due to pitch in the AFL All-Star Game later that night.

More importantly to all of Cardinal Nation, this suspension will delay Reyes’ first summons to St. Louis, which everyone assumes will happen in 2016. Ugh. What a way to kick off Hot Stove season.
