Cy Young – Michael Wacha

Prior to Saturday, the St. Louis Cardinals had won in all nine of Michael Wacha’s starts. But it’s not just offensive support of 5.5 runs per game that is helping Wacha, as the 23 year-old finished May with a 3-1 record and a 2.17 ERA.

St. Louis’ rotation was heavily tested after Adam Wainwright suffered a season-ending injury on April 25, but Wacha has showed his ability to pitch effectively late into games with four quality starts this month.

While victories against the pitching-heavy Kansas City Royals and New York Mets are impressive, his 1.38 ERA against division opponents has been critical to St. Louis’ early success in the standings.

Runner-up: Trevor Rosenthal (1-0, 0.61 ERA, seven saves)
