St. Louis Cardinals vs. Colorado Rockies 5/11/13 Lineups and Preview

Last night sure was fun, wasn’t it? Shelby Miller showed everyone exactly why he has been the organizations top pitching prospect with a performance that will be remembered for many years to come. It’s hard to believe he was a leadoff  broken bat duck snort away from a perfect game. Kudos to Shelby on a job well done, and kudos to the Cardinals for setting the tone in the opener of a 10 game home stand. Now, on to today’s game and the starting lineups.

1. Carpenter 2B

2. Jay CF

3. Holliday LF

4. Craig RF

5. Molina C

6. Adams 1B

Obviously, the Rockies are struggling at the plate right now, and not just because Shelby tossed a gem. Heading into last night’s game they were coming off a team batting average .239 home stand. It got much worse last night, and that was against St. Louis’ #5 starter.

Today, they will face Adam Wainwright and his 2.72 ERA. Waino is coming off his worst outing of the season, an 11 hit, 5 ER game in which he surrendered 2 home runs, and 2 hit batsmen. Fortunately, the Cardinals were able to outhit the Brewers and eek out a 7-6 win.

Meanwhile, the Rockies will counter with Jhoulys Chacin and his 2.56 ERA. Chacin is also coming off a poor outing which saw him surrender 5 ER on 8 hits in a loss to the Tampa Bay Rays back on May 5th. Aside from that start, however, Chacin has been pretty solid, surrendering no more than 2 ER in any game and posting 3 wins in the process.

With both pitchers looking to bounce back today this ought to be a well pitched duel. Historically, the Cardinals hitters have not had much exposure to Chacin, and in the limited exposure they have had only Jon Jay and Yadier Molina have more than 1 hit against him(2 each). That said, because the Cards are hot and Rockies are struggling, I am going to ride the hot horse today and call for yet another Redbirds victory.

I hope everyone enjoys their Saturday, and enjoys another Cardinals win too!
