Musings from an Optimistic Redbird Fan – 2013
Team Getting Set – The St. Louis Cardinals continue to whittle the spring training team down to the 25 man roster for the regular season. They recently sent Michael Waccha, Victor Marte, Eduardo Sanchez and Oscar Taveras. The two players I really hoped to stay on with the team are Taveras and Waccha. All things considered, it’s hard to believe the Redbirds couldn’t figure out a scenario and keep both players. I can kind of understand sending Waccha to AAA for now but, we could really use a bat like Taveras off the bat and also use his versatility. Don’t be surprised to see them before the All-Star break.
Who’s at Second? – Daniel Descalso and Matt Carpenter continue to compete for the starting job at second base. Both are doing well and I think it may end up being a platoon position. Both players are killing the ball in spring and by all indications, Carpenter is doing well at his new position. If it comes to the point both players are doing well, don’t be surprised if Descalso starts at the shortstop position with Carpenter playing second base and Pete Kozma the backup for both. In other words, I think experience will factor in the decision; especially since Kozma is also “killing” the ball. Either way, it’s a nice dilemma to have going into the regular season. Who are your picks for the Cards’ starting middle infield?
Opening Day Pitcher – its official, Adam Wainwright will be the starting pitcher for the Card’s opening day on April 1 in Arizona. He’ll have two more starts in spring training; the Cards won his start yesterday, Friday, March 15th against the Washington Nationals 5-1.
