Daily Rant: Cardinals take series with a win in Colorado

The Cardinals played the Rockies in the second game of their three game set on Wednesday night. After a short rain delay in the seventh, the Cardinals came away with a victory to keep pace with the Reds and Pirates. Matt Holliday had a great game and is emerging as a dark horse MVP candidate. The Positives

  • Daniel Descalso led off for the Cardinals and picked up a single and scored a run.
  • Allen Craig also hit a single and scored a run. He is working to get his average back over .300
  • Matt Holliday had his best game of the season. He his a single and two home runs and drove in five runs. The home runs were his 20th and 21st of the season.
  • Carlos Beltran hit two singles, scored a run, and stole his tenth base of the season.
  • David Freese hit his 20th double of the season.
  • Yadier Molina had a three hit night. He hit two singles and hit 19th double of the season. He scored twice and drove in a run.
  • Tyler Greene got the start at second base and hit an RBI double.
  • Edward Mujica had a good debut with the Cardinals. He pitched a perfect seventh inning.
  • Mitchell Boggs followed with a scoreless eighth inning.

Justin’s Jeers

  • Jake Westbrook got beat up. He pitched six innings and gave up five earned runs. He was tortured by the long ball, as two of his nine hits allowed were home runs. He also didn’t do himself any favors by allowing four walks.
  • Marc Rzepczynski gave up a third home run in the ninth inning, but shut down the rest of the Reds hitters.
  • Jon Jay was held hitless. He was the only Cardinals starter to not reach base with a hit.

Three Stars

3) Carlos Beltran – Beltran had a solid night at the plate and even pitched in a stolen base

2) Yadier Molina – Molina recorded three hits and scored two of the Cardinals runs.

1) Matt Holliday – Holliday had his best game of the season and led the Cardinals to victory.
