Daily Rant: Kelly has solid debut in Cardinals loss

The Cardinals faced the Indians in the rubber match of their three game series yesterday. Rookie Joe Kelly made his major league debut for the Cardinals, filling in for the injured Jaime Garcia. He had a solid outing, going five innings and only allowing one earned run. The Cardinals lost, however, thanks to a ninth inning home run by Jason Kipnis. Find out the details after the jump.

The Positives
- Carlos Beltran hit a solo home run in his second straight game. He had a 2-3 day and picked up a walk.
- David Freese also had a two hit day. His batting average sits at .266.
- Daniel Descalso chipped in with a hit, as did a pinch-hitting Shane Robinson.
- Joe Kelly had a solid debut outing. He pitched exactly the same as he had been in the minors. He only struck out four, but induced a lot of ground balls. He walked one batter, but his control was mostly on point.
- Victor Marte, Marc Rzepczynski, and Mitchell Boggs combined for three scoreless innings of baseball.
Justin’s Jeers
- A lot of starters went hitless in this one. Rafael Furcal, Yadier Molina, Allen Craig, Matt Adams, and Adron Chambers put nothing on the board. Furcal reached base on a walk, but there was still too little offense in this one.
- Yadier Molina and Allen Craig in particular let the team down, stranding seven runners between the two.
- Jason Motte gave up a game-winning three run blast to Jason Kipnis. This hurts double if, like a certain editor, you own him in fantasy baseball.
Three Stars
3) Joe Kelly – Solid outing for the rookie. He did what he could to fill in for Jaime and keep the Cardinals in this game.
2) David Freese – A two-hit night would have helped the Cardinals, but the offense around him wasn’t supportive.
1) Carlos Beltran – Beltran’s solo shot was the only run scored in this one.
Standings
Today’s Game
The Cardinals have an off-day today. This is good news for a bullpen that has been taxed pretty hard over the last few games.
