Reviewing the 2011 World Series Film DVD

I have watched the 2011 World Series Film produced by A&E Home Networks Entertainment multiple times and one thing I can definitely say with conviction—it never gets old.  Even though I know how it ends, it still gives me goosebumps.  The narration is first rate, St. Louis native Jon Hamm does a very good job expressing the emotion of the pivotal moments.  If you are a Cardinals fan it is difficult not getting caught up in it.  The film does a good job of highlighting the most exciting moments, especially in Game 6.   It’s almost like experiencing what it was like to be present there at those moments.  You can’t get that kind of stuff from watching Joe Buck and Tim McCarver, with all due respect to both of those gentlemen.

The behind the scenes shots were especially enjoyable.  My favorite was the shot of Yadier Molina exclaiming at the conclusion of Game 6, “Let’s play 9 more innings right now!”  These kinds of moments are things fans rarely get to see and they make the experience more meaningful.  I wish there had been more.  They could have made an entire DVD of just those kind of moments and I would buy it in a heartbeat.

If I had one complaint, it would be that the film wasn’t long enough.  I understand some things had to be left out.  Not all players could be featured.  The complete games can be viewed again but those extras, those player interviews, the off field interactions, if they are not enshrined on film they are lost forever.  That is a shame, but understandable.  The producers of the film did a good job in selecting the best highlights to show, and for that I am grateful.

The 2011 World Series Championship Collector’s Edition 8 Disc Set comes out on December 6.  I will be reviewing that as well.  I will also be giving away a free copy to one lucky winner.  That will come later.  For now, let us revel in the joy of the Film.  Let us bask in the glow of those moments we will forever remember.  Thank you A&E Home Networks Entertainment for giving those forever moments to us.
