It was 36 years ago on April 8 that Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s record for career home runs. He would finish his career with 755. Aaron has been a great ambassador for the game since his retirement and is one of the classiest people around. We salute the home run king and remember his impact on the game.
Aaron sat down with the AP and talked about his frustration with today’s game. He feels players have become too obsessed with the long ball. Although Aaron is the true home run king, he never had an outrageous total. The key to his success was consistency. He was a great hitter (3771 career hits); if it went over the fence, that was great too.
"“I don’t think they understand the role of what they need to be doing,” Aaron said Thursday during a visit to The Associated Press. “I’m not saying all of them, but I think some players need to understand that they’re never going to hit 50 home runs or 45 home runs (a year). They’ve got to learn how to hit the ball to the opposite field and do the little things to help their ballclub win championships.”"
Aaron hit it on the head with this interview once again. The current generation could take a few notes from the baseball legend.
