MLB Providing Help for Haiti, See What You Can Do Too

In this baseball offseason, we have devoted much time to the rumors, signings, and season previews, but in the past few weeks we are all reminded that baseball is only a small part of life. An earthquake struck Haiti January 12, leaving the country in ruins. The most recent reports indicate that “nearly 170,000” people are dead. Breaking news reports from today predict that number could rise as high as 250,000. The small island sits off the coast of Florida, and endures great poverty levels. An earthquake leaving hundreds of thousands dead leaves the country reeling even more, and in need of support to recover and rebuild. Haiti struggled before, now the struggle is even harder and relief efforts are paramount.

As neighbors, the United States has offered support in a multitude of ways. Companies and individuals have stepped up to send what they can through fundraisers and even text messaging campaigns ($10, every penny counts). The Obama’s have urged the American public to reach out. The support is there, but there can never be too much help to survive a disaster.

Major League Baseball offered a $1 million donation to the cause earlier this month. They are also pushing fans to help out through the UNICEF web site, which is taking donations. Teams like the Giants and Cubs did their own fundraisers, and superstars like Miguel Cabrera and Magglio Ordoñez have pledged personal donations. More teams are planning ways to help through auctions and other means. The baseball community is doing their part in this rescue mission, and it’s never too late to jump in.
