Cards Win Series, Lose Shortstops

The Cardinals traveled to Atlanta this week after winning five of their last six, hoping to stay atop the National League standings.  Heading in, the club was 13-6, and led the league in several pitching and offensive categories.

Although the Cardinals defense has been suspect, leading the NL with 21 errors on the young season, one player enjoyed a highlight reel series.

Utility infielder Brendan Ryan spent his time in Atlanta making some of the season’s best defensive plays. He’s done it at both second base and shortstop.

The Cardinals’ starting shortstop, Khalil Greene, was scratched tonight’s lineup after experiencing some tightness in his throwing arm near the end of the game yesterday.  While Ryan took his place in the lineup today, he was removed in the fifth inning with a hamstring injury.  Matthew Leach has more on the story.

Taking two of three from the Braves leaves the Cards with the League’s best record at 15-7, and 3.5 games up on the competition.

Next, the Birds travel to Washington for a three game series against the 5-15 Nationals. Mitchell Boggs will get the start on the mound for the Cards.  The question is, who will start at shortstop?
