Pujols Being Pujols

It was just another day at the office for the best hitter in baseball, but for the fans in St. Louis, seeing Albert Pujols doing yard work and single handedly dismantling Roy Oswalt and the Astros was a real treat.

With a grand slam off Oswalt in the fifth, and another three run shot off Wesley Wright in the seventh, Pujols collected 7 RBI on the way to an 11-2 Cardinal victory.

Albert didn’t particularly have a great spring, but he definitely has come out of the gate swinging to start the regular season.  In 21 at-bats, he’s collected 9 hits, including 3 home runs and a double.  He’s scored 6 runs and driven in 9, walked 5 times against only 1 strikeout, and is slugging .905.  Pujols leads the team in hits, walks, total bases, runs, RBI, home runs, slugging percentage, and awesomeness.

It’s hard to describe just how incredible Albert is, and how fortunate we are to get to see him play everyday.  Players like Pujols don’t come around very often, but yet we’ve grown accustom to his greatness, hold him to ridiculously high standards, and are no longer surprised by the things he does on the field.  Astros first baseman Lance Berkman isn’t surprised either.

“He’s the best hitter in the game, and he continues to do things like that that are amazing,” Berkman said.  “It really doesn’t surprise me.  I don’t think anything he did would surprise me.  If he homered in 10 straight at-bats, it wouldn’t surprise me.  He’s that good.”
