Two Cardinals players receive special honors this month.

Legendary Cardinal Hall of Fame slugger, Stan “The Man” Musial, will receive the Lone Sailor Award, which is given to naval veterans “who have distinguished themselves in their respective careers while exemplifying the core values of honor, courage, and commitment.” The Awards Dinner will be held in Washington, D.C., on October 29th. MLB.com reporter, Matthew Leach, has more of this story here. Musial hit .331 with 475 homeruns in 22 seasons with the Cardinals.

Current Redbird, Albert Pujols, has already received a Distinguished Alumni Award for his time in the Arizona Fall League. On Tuesday, Opening Day for the AFL this season, Pujols was on hand in Scottsdale to receive the unprecedented award, as well as witness the retirement of his Scottsdale Scorpions jersey. Lisa Winston, also of MLB.com, has that full story here. Albert has hit .332 with 282 homers in just 7 seasons as a Cardinal to begin his career.

I think what these two men have accomplished, both on and off the field, is truly remarkable, and it’s great to have them represent the tradition of the franchise. They are the heroes of Cardinal Nation.
