St. Louis Cardinals: A Win with a Cost?

The St. Louis Cardinals were glad to get another series win, but the fans might be holding their collective breath.

The Cardinals held back the Milwaukee Brewers, 5-3, in action Saturday at Miller Park. The win was the Cardinals’ ninth in 10 games, but the top starting pitcher may be injured.

Adam Wainwright left the game midway through with an ankle injury, and Redbird Rants will have more news available when Wainwright’s condition is updated.

For now, let’s take a look at the latest win from Miller Park:

*For the second day in a row, Jhonny Peralta provided a big boost with his bat. Peralta lifted his batting average to .344 when he slammed a three-run homer in the seventh inning off Brewers pitcher Jeremy Jeffress. Considering Peralta struggled mightily at times early last season when he signed his new contract, this is refreshing to see Peralta starting strong in the season’s first three weeks.

*Kolten Wong also provided a boost to the lineup with a triple in a two-run second inning.

*Jason Heyward smacked two doubles to give him six for the season, one each earned off of Brewers pitchers Wily Peralta and Will Smith.

*Wainwright struck out four batters in four innings before leaving the lineup.

The Cardinals improved to 12-4 overall and caught a break from Mother Nature as the Chicago Cubs were rained out Saturday in Cincinnati. That enabled St. Louis to sneak three games in front of the Cubs.

The teams finish the series Sunday at 2:10 p.m,
