Game 158 Game Thread

Just five games remaining in the regular season and the St. Louis Cardinals have a two game lead over both the Reds and Pirates and trail the Braves by just 1/2 game for home field advantage in the NL.  Tonight at home the first place Redbirds send rookie Michael Wacha (3-1 3.21 era) to the mound facing Gio Gonzalez (11-7 3.39 era) of the Nationals.

The injury front news for the Cardinals has only gotten worst the past few days.  Matt Holliday has missed the last two games with back issues and he is listed day to day.  Also the team will do x-rays on Allen Craig‘s injured ankle again this Thursday. It was reported that he was still in a walking boot now 3 weeks after spraining it.  It was hoped the Cardinals would get him back this week and get him some at bats before starting the playoffs.  So the Cardinals are down some players with offensive fire power, but they continue to find ways to keep on winning with good pitching and timely hitting.

Join us tonight to discuss the Cardinal game as we also scoreboard watch the Pirates, Reds and Braves games as well.

Good evening everyone. We are about game time and just a quick update as we get under way. Pirates and Cubs just started no score. Reds are down 4-1 in the 4th against the Mets and Braves are tied at 1 in the 5th against the Brewers. This is going to be so much fun tonight.

  • Mike King

In a bit of good news in the Reds game, the Reds starter Leake was knocked out in the second inning.

  • Mike King

Wacha has a very solid 1, 2 and 3 first inning.

  • Ovadia

Hey Mike! Thank you so much for taking over the threads for this week! I’ll try to stop in and chat when I can.

    • Mike King

      Glad to do it.

    • Mike King

Did you see my posts about Reds?

      • Ovadia

        Which one?

        • Mike King

Mets knocked out Leake in 2nd.

          • Ovadia

Ah, that. Yes. It made me very happy. All of baseball is making me happy right now, except the Pirates.

  • Mike King

Beltran with a hard hit off the top of the wall for a 2 out double.

  • Mike King

Bad news out of Chicago, Pirates up 3-0 in second.

  • Ovadia

Gotta ring ‘im up on that one.

    • Mike King

Very positive start here for Wacha!

      • Mike King

        6 up and 6 down

  • Ovadia

Wacha looks phenomenal. I like this.

  • Mike King

MIlwaukee has gone up on Atlanta 2-1 in 6th.

    • Mike King

And Atlanta quickly ties it back up at 2. Boooooo!!!!!!

  • Mike King

9 up and 9 down, with 5Ks!!!!! Wacha!!!!!!!!

    • Ovadia

      Man is on fire.

  • Mike King

Hey Chris, you know we are going to have a tough decision come playoffs. Which starter is not going to start? Obviously Waino goes, Kelly earned a start the second half. Then you have Miller, Wacha and Lynn. All pitching very well lately.

    • Ovadia

I agree with the announcers. You go with whoever’s hottest. Probably Miller and Wacha are my first choices, but I’d make sure that Lynn was ready out of the bullpen. If anyone struggles, you send the other guy in.

      • Mike King

I agree and all of a sudden Lynn is hot. He has given up 1, 2 and 1 run in each of his last 3 starts. Shelby and Wacha are both 4, 2 and 0. Going to be interesting.

        • Mike King

As you said you tell odd man out be ready to pitch in every game as he has the 6th and 7th every game if needed.

          • Ovadia

Or if Miller can’t get through the first you pull him immediately.

  • Mike King

Carp with a 2 out double. Robinson picks him up to go up 1-0

  • Ovadia

    There’s a run!

  • Mike King

That would be perfect thru 4 innings!

    • Ovadia

NO!!! He’s just been good. Stop it, dammit Mike.

    • Ovadia

      We can’t jinx such things.

      • Mike King

I am not even suggesting it yet. This is just a great start in the clutch for the team.

        • Ovadia

          Very nice start.

  • Ovadia

4 innings of pretty decent work. (When do we stop talking about Wacha?)

  • Mike King

4-2 Mets in 5th. Reds had 1 and 3 no out and hit into the DP. Going to 6th.

  • Mike King

Wow the future of this pitching staff is just scary good!

    • Ovadia

So true. Not gonna lie, Martinez’s curve ball is about the nastiest thing I’ve ever seen.

      • Mike King

Heck he is really 2 years away from starting to pitch well. Which is the scariest thing.

        • Ovadia

So true. The comparisons to Pedro are starting to make sense. When he gets pinpoint control, he will be nigh unhittable.

          • Mike King

Agree he just needs next year to continue to mature mentally and physically as a pitcher.

          • Mike King

Don’t get me wrong, he will be a contributor next year on the big club, but 2015 will be his coming out year that people will say, oh no not another one.

  • Mike King

    Yadi!!!!!! 2-0

  • Mike King

Freese contributing about as well as he can now a days, ground out to move up Yadi.

  • Ovadia

Dang, that was close. Right call, but you can always hope for a bad one.

    • Mike King

Good play all the way around.

  • Mike King

Braves going to bott 8 2-2, Reds going to top 7 down 4-2, Pirates up 4-1 in 4th.

    • Ovadia

Grrrr. Let’s go everybody playing against the teams I want to lose.

  • Ovadia

    Wacha.

  • Ovadia

    Damn.

    • Mike King

That is the problem with him playing that deep.

  • Ovadia

Ok, could have been much worse. And Carp is too valuable to be actually angry with.

    • Mike King

Better he do that now and no one on. Got it out of his system.

  • Mike King

There is an interesting (laughable) article in the Denver post. They are talking about Cards looking to trade for Tulo in the off season. They are looking for Wong, Adams, Taveras and Martinez.

    • Ovadia

No. We could talk about Adams, Jaime Garcia, and Lyons.

  • Mike King

Going to 8 in Cinci, still down 4-2.

  • Mike King

Pirates blow it open in 5th, 6-1 still batting 2 on and 1 out.

  • Ovadia

Wacha has only thrown 16 pitches outside of the strike zone. SIXTEEN. Holy . . .

  • Ovadia

    ATL won.

    • Mike King

      Thanks Brew Crew!

  • Mike King

Hey day game tomorrow. I am listening to the Nats broadcast nowto hear what they have to say.

    • Ovadia

Anything other than trying to jinx it?

      • Mike King

They did say he has the best fast and break ball combo they have seen this year.

        • Ovadia

And we whine about the fact that his curve ball needs some work.

  • Mike King

    Come on double play ball!

  • Ovadia

    Man . . . you just can’t hit that.

  • Mike King

Now we can start to talk about it.

  • Mike King

Bott 8 4-2 in Cinci, just starting.

    • Mike King

BP weak tap back to pitcher, 1 out

      • Mike King

Votto grounds out to 2nd. 2 out

        • Mike King

Ludwick grounds out to SS. 6 pitches to get those 3 out. LOL

          • Mike King

Going to Bott of 9, still 4-2. This will be great if it holds. That way we can root for Reds at home against Pirates this weekend.

  • Ovadia

    Here’s the eighth.

  • Ovadia

Double play. My goodness. I can’t even speak.

  • Ovadia

Huh. I didn’t know that he was Pujols’ compensatory pick.

    • Mike King

      Yep

  • Mike King

    Great play Robinson!

  • Mike King

Bott 9, 1 out in Cincy

    • Mike King

K but pass ball, 1 on 1 out

      • Mike King

        DP, Reds LOSE!

  • Mike King

Cubs threatening in 6th Bases loaded no one out.

    • Mike King

6-2 infield single bases still loaded no one out.

      • Mike King

Typical Cubs stink fashion, they strike out twice in a row with bases loaded and no outs.

  • Mike King

Last out for the NO NO!!!!! Come on Wacha!!!!!!

  • Mike King

OMG so disappointing for the kid. So close!!!!!!

    • Ovadia

Still a hell of a game, and it was a winner. Tough tough game, but still 8 and 2/3 with one hit. That counts as a hell of a game.

  • Berdj Rassam

Brave and Cards are tied for NL best record with 3 games left – both are at home, Braves playing Phillies and Cards playing Cubs. Going to go down to the wire.
