St. Louis Cardinals rally, defeat Houston Astros with 5-4 victory

Shelby Miller did not bring his best stuff last night as the St. Louis Cardinals had to come from behind to win the game with a 5-4 victory.

Miller pitched 5 innings last night. He allowed 5 hits, 3 runs, walked 5, and struck out 5. He now has a 2.92 ERA heading into the All-Star break. A victory for Miller last night would have placed him in good company with Lance Lynn and Adam Wainwright for double-digit wins.

Seth Maness pitched the sixth and seventh innings to get the win for the Cardinals. He allowed 2 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, and struck out 3 batters.

Trevor Rosenthal pitched the eighth inning, where he allowed 2 hits, and struck out 2 batters.

Edward Mujica pitched the ninth inning and picked up his 25th save of the season. The Cardinals closer allowed 1 hit and struck out 1 batter.

In the second inning, Matt Adams drove home Allen Craig with a single.

In the fifth inning, Matt Holliday had a 2-run single that scored both Tony Cruz and Shane Robinson.

In the seventh inning, Matt Carpenter hit a home run to right field that also scored Tony Cruz.

Following last night’s game, the Cardinals decided to make a roster move. Right-handed pitcher Carlos Martinez has been recalled from the Memphis Redbirds. Right-handed pitcher Michael Blazek was sent down to Memphis.

This is the second time up for Martinez after making seven relief appearances (0-0, 4.50 ERA, 8.0 IP, 9 SO) back in May. Prior to being called up, Martinez had been optioned to Memphis on May 27th, where he went 3-2 with a 1.98 ERA over 8 starts. In 41 innings, he walked 16, and struck out 35 batters. He was honored in the month of June as the Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Month.
