Just when all of the Cardinals (except Wainwright of course) seemed to finally be nearing their end of the stint on the DL, we may be looking at adding two more to the list.
Wednesday night Lance Berkman and Matt Holliday left the game on separate occasions to put a little scare into the club.
Matt Holliday left with tightness in his quadriceps in the third inning and Berkman came out in the firth with a wrist injury. The injuries are however are described as rather minor, but anytime you are missing the top two batters in baseball you tend to get a little concerned. The Cardinals outfield is currently ranked #1 in the league, but luckily we have tremendous backup in Jon Jay and Allen Craig plus the return of Colby in todays game.
Adam Wainwright is of course out for the entire season and perhaps some of next after finding ligament damage in his elbow that led to Tommy John Surgery. Other pitchers have been the relievers Bryan Augenstein (strained right groin) and Brian Tallet (broken bone in right hand) who both are in the rehab process currently. Tallet is slated to come back the end of May and Augenstein is expected back around mid June.
David Freese has of course been the other long standing man on the DL nursing a broken left hand, he is due back in July.
Skip Schumaker is expected to make his rehab start tonight after suffering strained quadriceps and looks to be called back to St. Louis soon.
Nick Punto is another one just now making it to the DL. He came back fairly recently for his first games as a Cardinal and has performed very well on both sides of the ball. He has a right forearm flexor strain and was put on the DL May 18 with an expectation of being back in June.
So Berkman, Punto, and Holliday are our new concerns at this time with everyone else set to be making their rehab starts fairly soon for the most part. These injuries are hopefully very minor as they believe and we won’t have to see that explosive outfield be on the shelf for too long.
