St. Louis Cardinals: Edmundo Sosa promoted to the MLB

The St. Louis Cardinals have added Edmundo Sosa to the active roster to add infield depth following the Kolten Wong injury.

While Kolten Wong is not on the DL, he has missed two straight games. Edmundo Sosa has played all three infield positions, making him a smart choice to provide some depth to the St. Louis Cardinals infield.

It was three short months ago that I was writing about Sosa’s call up to Memphis, and now he gets the biggest promotion of his career. This season is proving to be a big one for the young infielder, getting his first taste at the Triple A level, and in the MLB.

Sosa making it to the major league level is no surprise, we all thought he would get there eventually. He is the St. Louis Cardinals 15th ranked prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. He relies on a 60 grade glove in the field, and his 50 grade hit tool with a bat in his hands. His ceiling is an everyday shortstop.

Earning The Promotion

If not for the issues with Wong, we wouldn’t see Sosa get called up this year. But that doesn’t mean he did not earn it. In his first try at Triple A, the 22 year old shortstop his .262 in nearly 200 at bats. He added to that 13 doubles, five homers, and five stolen bases.

Overall in 2018, across both Springfield and Memphis, Sosa was a .270 hitter with 12 long balls, the highest mark of his career. He flashed more power than he ever has, which is a good sign. By far, his lowest grade is his power at 30. Sosa might not ever be a consistent power threat, but he is clearly addressing the weaknesses in his game to try and become a more well-rounded player.

Down The Stretch

This is going to be a very short cup of coffee for Sosa. The St. Louis Cardinals have only seven games left at time of publication. But this gets the top prospect an idea of what to expect. There is a chance, albeit a rather small chance, that the infielder could break camp with the big club next year.

Another option is that the Cardinals are putting Sosa on display for other organizations to see. Between Wong, Paul DeJong, and the big bat we all hope is coming, there is simply no room on the infield. Trading Sosa is not out of the question.

For now, this is a big moment for Sosa and it is well deserved. He has been working his way through the Cardinals system since 2013, and the dream has finally come true.
