Cards drop last three to Phils: Halladay all business, Lohse struggles

AUTHOR: Ryne Gery | IN: Cardinals, Freese, Lohse | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

The Cardinals dropped their third straight game after losing to the Roy Halladay and the Phillies 7-2 Thursday afternoon. St. Louis managed just three runs in the final three games of the series despite playing in the hitter’s friendly Citizen’s Bank Park. The struggles today may have had to do with the fact that Roy Halladay was on the mound for Philly. The newest Phillies ace threw seven strong innings, allowed one earned run and struck out nine. For the Cards, Kyle Lohse ended the rotation’s three-week streak of quality starts. He got off to a bad start on a [...]

Lohse great, Schumaker clutch in Cardinals 6-3 win

AUTHOR: Ryne Gery | IN: Cardinals, Franklin, Freese, Lohse, Pujols, Schumaker | COMMENTS: None Yet

Skip Schumaker came up big with a two-out RBI single in the eighth inning to spark the Cardinals to a 6-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. The Cards led 1-0 and 3-1, but the Reds knotted the score both times. In the bottom of the eighth, St. Louis broke free with three runs, starting with Schumaker’s single. The other two runs came on bases-loaded walks. Ryan Franklin closed things out in the ninth for the win.
Kyle Lohse was lights out for seven innings, but is still searching for his first win. Lohse gave up one run, struck out eight, and [...]

St. Louis falls to Cincinnati 3-2 after rain delay

AUTHOR: Ryne Gery | IN: Cardinals, Lohse, Penny | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Cardinals’ calendar flipped from April to May as they finished up their game with the Reds following a long rain delay. The Cards couldn’t get anything going after the delay and lost 3-2. The delay lasted for about 2 1/2 hours and when the lights went out at Busch, it was after midnight. So, April showers brought us May baseball a little early. The showers also gave the Reds a little bit of an advantage in the sixth when they plated two runs to take a 3-2 lead.
Lightning, thunder, and hard rain all combined to make conditions tough in [...]

Cardinals finish strong to edge Braves 4-3

AUTHOR: Ryne Gery | IN: Cardinals, Glaus, Lohse, Molina, Pujols | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

The Cardinals used a late-game surge to top the Braves in the series opener in St. Louis by a score of 4-3. St. Louis trailed 3-0 after five innings before scoring four runs from the sixth to the eighth inning. Yadier Molina was the hero with an RBI double in the eighth to give the Cardinals their first and only lead of the game. Ryan Franklin headed to the mound and got the final three outs to complete the strong finish.
Albert Pujols, who got the comeback started with an RBI groundout in the sixth, had three hits for St. Louis. [...]

Lohse fails to take advantage of support, Cards lose 9-7

AUTHOR: Ryne Gery | IN: Cardinals, Lohse | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

After four innings last night, the Cardinals had scored seven runs. Ryan Ludwick hit two home runs. Albert Pujols made one round trip. And Brendan Ryan tripled in two runs. Not bad. The only problem: Kyle Lohse and the bullpen were serving up even more big hits. The Cards seven runs were trumped by Arizona’s eight through four innings. St. Louis went cold the rest of the way and Arizona tacked on another run to finish the game 9-7.
Pitchers usually dream of a night like that. A flurry of early runs puts them at ease and allows them to calmly [...]

AUTHOR: Ryne Gery | IN: Cardinals, Jim Edmonds, Lohse | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Cardinals begin a three-game set in Milwaukee tonight before the team goes home to St. Louis to open the 2010 festivities at Busch Stadium. After taking two of three from the Reds, the Cardinals will try to win another series against a division rival. The Brewers are also 2-1 after its opener.
Jim Edmonds adds some intrigue to tonight’s game. He will start in right field and bat sixth for the Brewers. The former Cardinals favorite and veteran major leaguer is making a comeback after a year away from the game. His comeback was sparked by a friendly encounter between [...]

Cards News and Notes and March Madness Fun: Bullpen, Ali, and Big Red

AUTHOR: Ryne Gery | IN: Cardinals, Kinney, La Russa, Lohse, McClellan, Ottavino, Penny | COMMENTS: None Yet

While the entire nation was mesmerized by the NCAA tournament this weekend, the St. Louis Cardinals continued to fine-tune its final roster for this season. While we learned more about Ali Farokhmanesh, the Cornell Big Red, and Omar Samhan and the pesky St. Mary’s squad, Tony La Russa learned a little bit more about his club, too.
-The bullpen is almost full after the third round of cuts this spring. Among those sent to the minors was Josh Kinney. Kinney was the feel-good story at spring’s start. Many were pulling for him to sneak onto the roster after injuries sidetracked his [...]

Cards, Reds, and Skyline Chili

AUTHOR: mikewest | IN: Ankiel, Glaus, Lohse, Pineiro, Wainwright | COMMENTS: None Yet

Sure it’s the Cincinnati Reds, but the Cardinals couldn’t have drawn a tougher assignment. In a three game series, they had to face three of the better starting pitchers in the National League in Johnny Cueto, Aaron Harang, and Edinson Volquez.  Not an easy task for any team, but the Redbirds gave it a shot, already missing their slugging third baseman Troy Glaus, and now short a power hitting outfielder in Rick Ankiel.
Coming into this series, St. Louis hoped to widen their lead over the rest of the NL Central. Instead, they leave Cincinnati with a record of 20-12, and [...]

Barton Traded to Atlanta

AUTHOR: mikewest | IN: Barton, Boyer, Franklin, Lohse, Springer, Wellemeyer | COMMENTS: None Yet

Here’s a real tongue twister:
Brian Barton to Braves for Blaine Boyer to boster bullpen.
That’s right.  In somewhat of a surprise move today, the Cardinals traded outfielder Brian Barton to Atlanta for right-handed reliever Blaine Boyer.
During their most recent road trip, the Cards found themselves long on innings, but short on arms.  The club shuffled pitchers on and off the 25 man roster to help eat some of those innings in games where the starters didn’t throw their share.  The final game of the Chicago series was the perfect time for a rain out, and thanks to today’s off day, the [...]
