As the Major League baseball season is now in full swing the Minor League baseball season is also a week into the books and the Memphis Redbirds have seen early success posting a 3-3 record going into tonight. The Redbirds split their first series of the season with the Iowa Cubs winning the first two games by 7-4 and 8-1 scores and then falling in the last two games by 13-0 and 7-2 scores. With Monday’s game postponed the Redbirds will look to take the series against the Omaha Storm Chasers tonight. Memphis lost their first meeting of the season Tuesday 5-1 but came back with a 4-2 victory last night.

Marco Gonzales had the most hype going into the start of the Minor League season. Many believed that he should be the St Louis Cardinals 5th starter over Carlos Martinez but Mike Matheny decided for Gonzales to be the Memphis ace instead. Through the first week Marco has made two starts receiving a no decision on both occasions. Those two starts included pitching 10 innings while giving up 6 runs, all earned, giving him a 5.40 ERA. He has fanned 7 batters while walking only 3.

Another pitcher to look good for the Redbirds early on is 24 year old Tim Cooney. In his first start of the season he pitched 6 innings while only giving up 4 hits and no runs on his way to a win. He struck out 3 batters while only walking one.

On the hitting side Dean Anna has looked impressive through the first week. Going into tonight he possesses a .333 batting average along with 2 RBI’s. While all 8 of his hits thus far have been singles it’s nice to see him making contact and you can only hope it continues.

Xavier Scruggs has shown the most power with 4 home runs already early in the season. He owns a .286 batting average along with 9 RBI’s. You can only assume that Scruggs’ good performance will continue in the time that he is in Memphis.

The Redbirds will wrap up their 4 game set with the Storm Chasers tonight and then go on an 8 game road trip. Their first stop will be Round Rock, Texas for a 4 game set against the Express. After that they will enter another 4 game series with the Storm Chasers in Omaha.
