Middle Infield Help? Asdrubal Cabrera? Really! Why?

facebooktwitterreddit

Killing time while on Twitter Wednesday, I thumbed past this tweet from CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman.

I know this is just an information dump tweet from Heyman. He’s just putting it out there. Asdrubal Cabrera has often been on the Cardinals radar. For the past few years, there have been rumors that the Cardinals were either looking to sign him or make a trade for him. And that’s fine.

But.

He can play either third base, second base or shortstop.

He isn’t exactly a bench guy.

That’s what the Cardinals had been looking for… I thought.

He is a two time All-Star and a Silver Slugger Award winner with a career line of .268/.330/.409.

Matt Carpenter plays third base for the Cardinals. He could be backed up by a host of guys that will be on the bench or in the minors.

Jhonny Peralta is our shortstop. He is aging. He was streaky. And he has those P.E.D. issues. He too has a host of backups. Plus Aledmys Diaz has been dubbed by those in the know as the future shortstop of the organization.

Kolten Wong is our second baseman. He is young. And expected to be the Cards second baseman for years to come. He spent some time in the dog house in Memphis. He can be amazing at times and at other times you’re left on the edge of your seat, shaking with fits of rage.

They non-tendered Daniel Descalso because they had no spot for him. Dean Anna and Ty Kelly were each signed as middle infield backups. And then you have Pete Kozma and Greg Garcia.

I know John Mozeliak was probably just doing his due diligence it looking into Cabrera. It just makes you wonder what’s going on. Is something medically wrong? Is one of them in Matheny or Mozeliak’s dog house? Did one of them tick off Trevor Rosenthal?

I ask, because this isn’t the only Heyman tweet Wednesday noting the Cardinals interest in a middle infielder.

Korean shortstop Jung-Ho Kang that is…

It concerns me, as it probably does you, that Mozeliak is letting it be out there – with seemingly no comment – that they are looking for a middle infielder.

So. What’s going on? Why are they kicking the tires on a middle infielder? Hopefully we learn just that in the next few days or weeks! And not April or May or the playoff chase.
