Carlos Martinez Begins Winter League Stint, While Xavier Scruggs Closes His Out

Two members of the St. Louis Cardinals played in Winter League ball this weekend. Carlos Martinez was just getting started. Xavier Scruggs was closing out his time.

According to Brian Stull of StlBaseballWeekly.com, Carlos Martinez made his first start of the season for the Aguilas Cibaenas. He went 3.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits while striking out three hitters.

The three strikeouts are promising! The three hits and two earned are not so much, but it is his first start of the winter.

Carlos additionally got to spend time with his family and with his manager, Mike Matheny. Very nice of Matheny to spend time with the young pitcher, indeed.

Xavier Scruggs capped off an amazing winter league with the Dominican League. According to Stull, Xavier Scruggs closed out his Dominican League season with a pair of hits–including a 2-out RBI as his Gigantes del Cibao won 9-1 over Estrellas de Oriente on Sunday.

Additionally? Scruggs hit .264 with 5 home runs and drove in 19 runs in 28 games for the Gigantes.

That’s pretty great for Xavier. Let’s hope he keeps it up in the spring. If he’s with the Memphis Redbirds or on the bench for the St. Louis Cardinals, his work will be appreciated.
