Unscientifically Scientific: Max Scherzer or Jon Lester?

In this edition of unscientifically scientific, I take a look at the debate for getting a starting pitcher.

I, again, launched the CastApp application on my phone. This is the question I posed:

"Pitching upgrade for the Cardinals? Who would you like to see our team get?"

Here is a look at the options I gave for answers:

"A. Max ScherzerB. Jon LesterC. Someone else? Who? D. Pitching? Psh! We have Jaime Garcia!"

So the results were pretty much as I suspected considering one of the choices was a Cy Young caliber native St. Louisan, and Mizzou graduate, in Max Scherzer! Here are the results!

"Scherzer 63%Lester 25%Someone else? 7%Psh! We got Garcia! 5%"

I did receive one comment. Peter Schultz checked the someone else option. He added, ” Cards will go the cheap or shorter route and try and sign Shields, Peavy or McCarthy. I want Scherzer the most though.”

An offseason ago, I would probably agree with Peter. But. John Mozeliak has seemed willingly to spend when he thinks he can get the most bang for his buck. Max would be that, Brandon McCarthy? Not so much. James Shields or Jake Peavy would be interesting. But, I’m pretty meh about both. I’m pretty much against McCarthy though. I hope that isn’t being considered at all. Sorry, I’m not sorry!

But yes, the addition of Scherzer would be amazing! He was an All-Star and Cy Young runner up this season. He had a record of 18-5 with a 3.15 ERA in 33 games started. He pitched 220.1 and struck out 252 while giving up 77 earned runs.

If the Cardinals could get him at a reasonable price for a substantial number of years? That would be awesome. He would be an innings eater. A guy able to get outs. A welcome addition!

This is all pure fun and speculation. But if the Cardinals do get Scherzer, I’ll be happy … as I’m sure many, at least 63% of you, will be happy!
