During the final month of the season, Wainwright posted a perfect 5-0 record in five starts for the Cardinals. This tied him for the lead in Major League wins in September.

Wainwright’s 39.0 innings pitched tied for third while his 1.38 ERA (6 ER/39.0 IP) saw him rank sixth amongst those pitchers who qualified. In five starts, the Georgian native struck out 29 batters while waling only five batters. Opponents were limited to a .213 batting average during the month.

This is the second career Pitcher of the Month Award for Wainwright. His first award came for the month of June 2013. Wainwright capped off the month with a solid outing against the Chicago Cubs on September 22nd for his 20th win during the season. The milestone followed a complete game shutout against the Milwaukee Brewers just a few days before.

Wainwright finished the season with a 20-9 record with a 2.38 ERA. In 227.0 IP over 32 starts, the pitcher struck out 179 batters.

To commemorate his performance, Wainwright will receive a specially designed trophy. With two Pitcher of the Month awards now under his belt, Wainwright’s goal remains a Cy Young Award.
