Carlos Martinez working out as a starting pitcher

In what is surely another factor to the 2014 St. Louis Cardinals tryouts for the rotation, Carlos Martinez is going into Spring Training as if he were going to be in the rotation. That’s not a given as there are more arms than slots unless the Cardinals want to go to a 6 or 7-man rotation this season.

Martinez is a great kid and could very well be the next coming of Pedro Martinez. He’s got a promising career ahead of him. It’s a matter of where is the best fit for him and the Cardinals. Is it late in the game as a reliever or every fifth day in the rotation?

Pitching coach Derek Lilliquist said that the club is “keeping all our options open.” Time will certainly tell as to who ends up where.

While manager Mike Matheny says it is “way too early” to even think about the lineup, the pitcher will be hitting ninth. The manager delivered his third State of the Cardinals address on Tuesday.

Workouts have officially begun for the team.

Mark Ellis would like to play in a World Series, even if Kolten Wong sees more time at second. The former Dodgers infielder thought that St. Louis would be his “best chance” to get to a World Series in October.
