Lance Lynn will take the mound against Pirates rookie Gerrit Cole. Lynn had a rocky second half of the season and finished the year with a 15-10 record with a 3.97 ERA. In 16 home games, Lynn went 9-3 with a 2.82 ERA–far better than the 5.15 ERA on the road. Against the Pirates, however, Lynn has a 2-1 record with a 5.60 ERA over 5 start.

For Cole, this will be the first time that he will face the Cardinals in his MLB career.

The Cards got to A.J. Burnett very early yesterday. The pitcher gave up seven runs in the third inning without an out. Was he trying to do his best impression of Carlos Marmol? With the seven-run third inning, the Cards set a new NLDS record for runs scored in an inning.

Adam Wainwright pitched 7 strong innings to help the Cards take Game 1. He allowed 3 hits, 1 run, and struck out 9 batters. Only Carlos Martinez and Trevor Rosenthal saw any work out of the bullpen.

With his performance yesterday David Freese has now driven in 27 runs in 32 postseason games. In doing so, he ties Molina for third place in franchise history with 27 RBI a piece. Ahead of them are Albert Pujols (52) and Jim Edmonds (41).

The Cards set a NLDS record with their seven-run third inning, one shy of the MLB-record eight-run fifth the Angels put up in 2002.
