Game Thread 159

Scott Rovak-USA TODAY Sports

The St. Louis Cardinals send another rookie, Shelby Miller, to the mound today in search of the 3 game sweep at home and 6 game season sweep over the Washington Nationals and their starter Jordan Zimmermann.  This will be the last start for both pitchers this year in regular season and Zimmermann comes in with a 19-8 record and 3.18 ERA while Shelby is 14-9 with a 3.12 ERA.

In some good news for the Redbirds it appears Matt Holliday will be making his first start after missing the last three due to back spasms.  Matt was red hot before going down with the injury and the Cardinals need him to contribute as they continue to fight for the NL Central title as well as the NL best over all record.  With 4 games remaining for the entire NL Central contending teams the Cards lead the Pirates by 2 games and the Reds by 3.  The Cardinals also trail the Atlanta Braves by 1/2 game, they have 5 games remaining, for the best record in the NL and home field advantage.  The Braves own the tie breaker between the two teams so the Redbirds realistically have to win out to have a legitimate shot at home field.

Join us today during the day game to discuss the game, the upcoming playoffs and we will also keep an eye on the Cincinnati Reds game that is starting an hour earlier.  A Reds loss with a Cardinal win today will eliminate the Reds from winning the NL Central.  We will also keep an eye on the Pittsburgh Pirates game at the Chicago Cubs that starts an hour after the Cardinals begin.  So a lot of playoff impacting games going on this afternoon and we will be discussing and monitoring all of it.

Good afternoon everyone. We are in the room a bit early as I have the Reds/Mets game on already. They have completed 2 innings and both starters are dominate so far. We are 30 minutes to the start of the Cards game but will post updates if warranted from the Reds game before then.

  • Mike King

Mets up 1-0 on a HBP, sac bunt, wild pitch and a very slow grounder thru a pulled in infield.

  • Mike King

Early scare for the Cardinals. Miller gives up a lead off walk and Span attempted a steal of second. Yadi throws him out and as Carp goes to tag him out his glove had get trapped between Spans spikes and the base ripping his glove off and causing the runner to be safe and Carp to be in pain. Fortunately he stays in the game.

  • Mike King

Shelby starting off with control issues. 2 Walks first 3 batters.

  • Mike King

Holliday miss plays a fly ball into a hit and rbi. Hit his glove as he was sliding. 1-0

  • Mike King

A couple of running catches by Jay in Center on line drives to help Miller escape only giving up 1 run. Not a pretty start at all by the Cardinals.

  • Mike King

Span makes a nice play at the wall in CF to catch a fly ball by Beltran.

  • Mike King

    9 pitch 1, 2, 3 for Shelby in 2nd. Much better.

  • Mike King

Freese continues to play awful ball. 1st and 2nd 1 out and hits a routine ground ball to SS that he jogs down the base line on. Never mind Jay went into 2nd hard trying to break it up. I don’t mind him hitting into the DP but run it out hard!

  • Mike King

1, 2,3 Third for Miller. Got away with a hanging breaking ball to Werth. Hit it to the track in LF corner caught by Holliday.

  • Mike King

DD lead off double setting up Miller to try a sac bunt.

    • Mike King

Sac not pretty, but gets the job done.

      • Mike King

Carp hits hard GB to 1st and not able to field cleanly scoring DD. 1-1 2 out bases empty.

  • Mike King

Cubs get 1 in bott of 1st up 1-0, Reds down 1-0 in 7th.

  • Mike King

Miller gives up a 2 out single, but then gets the next guy to K, going bott of 4. Miller has around 65 pitches so far.

  • Mike King

Holliday hit by pitch to leadoff and Adams follows it with a double down the 3rd base line. 2nd and 3rd no outs.

  • Mike King

Yadi with ground ball hit up the middle plating 2!!!!!!!!! 3-1 Cardinals.

  • Mike King

Bottom of 8 Votto flies out with men on 2nd and 3rd and 2 out. Going to 9 1-0 Mets.

  • Mike King

Another inning Miller gives up a 2 out single and then Ks the last batter. 77 pitches thru 5 innings. After a very shaky start, Miller settled in nicely.

  • Mike King

Typical Cub fashion, get 2 outs then give up back to back singles and then back to back walks. 1-1 going bottom of 3.

  • Mike King

Going bottom of 9 at Cincy 1-0. If Reds fail to score puts Redbirds able to eliminate them with a win today. Come on Mets!

  • Mike King

This inning Miller gives up 1 out single and then uses a DP to get out of it. Bottom of 6 3-1 and 81 pitches.

  • Mike King

    Adams hits HR 4-1

  • Mike King

REDS LOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are in door me position for NL Central.

  • Mike King

Miller gives up a lead off walk and MM pulls him. Manness comes in and immediately gets a ground ball DP and then a quick gb for 3rd out. Going bottom of 7 4-1.

  • Mike King

Cardinals Win! Reds are eliminated from NL Central Title. Now we root for Reds to win this weekend to take care of the Pirates.

  • Mike King

Pirates just gave up a 3 run bomb in the 6th to the Cubs and trail 4-1 now. If Cubs hold on, big IF, then Pirates will be in door me situation. Down 3 with 3 to go. Come on Cubs???? Sounds so odd.
