How much did the Cardinals win by? This much. Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

Cardinals at Rockies, Game 153 Thread

There are officially ten games left in the season. That’s all. Just ten games before the glory of October baseball begins. Get excited.

Get even more excited about the fact that the Cardinals are now a full two games in first place, only one game away from having the best record in the National League. The Cardinals have gotten hot at the right time, and hopefully it can carry over into the playoffs.

That said, there is some bad news to cover before we get into today’s game: Matt Adams has some pain in his elbow and Joe Kelly has a strained calf. It isn’t clear how bad Adams’ injury is, but the prospect of having Peterson play first for any length of time isn’t a happy one. Kelly, on the other hand, doesn’t think he’ll have to miss a start, which is good news.

Now today’s game will hopefully be a good game as the veteran Roy Oswalt takes on Michael Wacha. In 5 starts and 6 games this year, Oswalt is 0-6 with a 7.71 ERA. That said, we know he can be better than that: he has a 10-9 record with a 3.19 ERA against the Cardinals in his career.

Wacha, on the other hand, has been doing very well in the rotation. He’s 3-1 with a 2.81 ERA this season. His last outing was a little rough, when he gave up 2 runs over 5 innings, but he also recorded 7 strikeouts. If he can keep from walking batters the way he did then (4 walks over the course of the night), he should be much more effective.

So in today’s battle of old and new, we hope that Wacha can prove that the new generation is better. And give the Cardinals a win.

Let’s go St. Louis!

  • Ovadia

Welcome to today’s game thread! Let’s go Cardinals!!!

  • Ovadia

Who’s on first? Carp, of course!

  • Ovadia

    2 down.

  • Ovadia

Man Carp. That was a mistake. Oh well. Come on Wacha!

  • Ovadia

    Yadi at first for Adams.

  • Ovadia

    Lead-off hit.

  • Ovadia

    Wacha K.

  • Ovadia

2 Ks. 2 down. Runner still on first.

  • Ovadia

Three Ks for Wacha. Top of the second.

  • Ovadia

    Beltran walks!

  • Ovadia

    GIDP for Yadi . . .

  • Mike King

Looks like going to be one of those days we struggle to begin with and then hopefully break it open with a big inning.

    • Ovadia

We’ve had some good contact. Hopefully that turns into runs in the third.

  • Ovadia

1-0 rockies. Such a crap inning.

  • Mike King

Good news is it sounds like Adams will be back over the weekend.

    • Ovadia

      Good.

  • Ovadia

    2 outs, another run scores.

  • Ovadia

This is in no way good.

  • Ovadia

Finally out of that mess. That was ugly.

  • Mike King

Got them right where we want them, 2-0. Just like last night.

  • Mike King

Need to put on our hot stove wish list, a decent back up catcher.

    • Ovadia

      I don’t know. I actually like Tony.

      • Mike King

I am so tired of 200 hitters on our bench.

        • Ovadia

But Cruz can catch. And I theorize that he could hit if he ever actually played. He just never does. All of our backup catchers will be .200 hitters, because they’ll only hit once every 10-15 games. They’ll only play like once every 20-25.

  • Ovadia

Troy goes deep. Huh. Who woulda guessed?

    • Mike King

With a belt high fastball with no movement. Shocking huh?

  • Mike King

Got to go get Wacha. You cannot let him get beat up this way and have his confidence take a hit.

  • Ovadia

Jay on. Lead-off walk from Oswalt. Now get him Holliday.

  • Mike King

    here we go boys!!!!

  • Ovadia

1st and 3rd, no outs. Let’s go Yadi!

  • Ovadia

4-2 Rockies, let’s go! Come on Freese!

  • Mike King

Freese got lucky on not hitting into a DP.

  • Mike King

LOL me bad mouthing the backup catcher.

    • Ovadia

I told you, I like Tony. If he ever played, he’d learn to hit.

  • Ovadia

Come on Wacha . . . this is not ok.

  • Ovadia

    Back on track, it seems.

    • Mike King

      Big at bat here.

  • Mike King

Could be a big momentum swing…

  • Mike King

Wow Carp having a bad day… That is so unusual.

  • Ovadia

    Jay’s on again.

  • Mike King

Oswalt is so used to getting pitches 6-8 inches off the plate from earlier in his career.

  • Mike King

    Yea 4-4

  • Ovadia

    Tie game! Great stuff!

  • Mike King

    OK bullpen, do your thing!

  • Ovadia

Yadi goes down. A coupla runs would be nice. As much as I trust Siegrist.

  • Mike King

Another fun playoff like game. This is great as it is getting the guys ready for the real deal!

  • Ovadia

    And Siegrist through the 6th.

  • Ovadia

    Let’s go Ax-man.

  • Ovadia

And John gets a K. Runner on first, 1 out.

  • Ovadia

End of the seventh, now let’s score some runs.

  • Ovadia

One on, two outs for Freeze.

  • Ovadia

That is a lead! Just shy of a home run, but it’s a dropped fly ball. WOO!!!

  • Ovadia

Now let’s go get ‘em ‘pen.

  • Ovadia

Matt is in the game, good to see!

  • Ovadia

Another strike out for Rosie. One more out in the eighth.

  • Ovadia

Tie ball game as that one gets passed Jay’s glove.

    • Mike King

That is on MM for having him play so shallow. I have no idea what they were thinking. Routine depth and that is an easy out.

      • Ovadia

I agree. Wasn’t Jon’s fault at all, but it still hurts.

  • Ovadia

Rosenthal needs another out, and then we need another run.

  • Ovadia

Kozma makes a nice play, now onto the ninth. Cards need another run.
