Cardinals at Rockies, Game 150 Thread

Not long ago, I wrote a post about the end of the Cardinals’ season and how I thought they would fare. So far, I’ve been spot on. We took two of three from both the Brewers and the Mariners. It wasn’t always pretty, but the Cards came through and finished their home stand with a 5-2 record.

Now, they’re headed into a road trip against the Rockies and the Brewers again. If my predictions continue to be correct, St. Louis should come back from their seven game showdown having gone 4-3. I’d prefer 5-2, but we’ll see.

In the meantime, the Cardinals have to get through Collin McHugh tonight. He’s a rookie making a spot start for Dane De La Rosa, and his results this season have been far from inspiring. He has a 10.50 ERA in 12 innings this season. Tonight will be his third start. Hopefully, the Cards can take advantage of an inexperienced pitcher and kick off this road trip with a bang!

On the mound for St. Louis is Lance Lynn. As we all know, he’s been struggling lately, but turned it around in his last start and managed to throw six shutout innings against the Brewers. It would be good to see his success continue, both for his own sake and for the club’s sake. It would be nice to have another reliable pitcher down the stretch.

Well, here we go in Denver! Let’s hope the Cardinals kick this one off the right way!

Let’s go St. Louis!!!

Welcome to the game thread! Let’s go Cardinals!

  • Ovadia

    Base hit!

  • Ovadia

Nice running catch by Dickerson. One out, Carp still on first.

  • Ovadia

Holliday doesn’t quite get all of it. Two down. Let’s go Beltran.

  • Ovadia

And Carp’s lead off hit goes to waste. Now let’s see Lynn.

  • Ovadia

    Lead off walk for Lynn.

  • Ovadia

And Carp makes a nice play.

  • Ovadia

And Tullo drives a double. 1-0 Rockies. Wouldn’t it be nice if we had him as our SS?

  • Ovadia

Two down after a ground out. Now here comes Todd Helton. Some of his last at bats here at Coors.

  • Ovadia

    Come on Lynn!

  • Ovadia

And Helton down on strikes. Not an awful inning for Lynn. Hopefully he can keep it to one run.

  • Ovadia

    Yadi pops out to right.

  • Ovadia

Adams rips a single. Nice piece of hitting. One on, one out.

  • Ovadia

Freese pops out to center. But boy does the ball carry here. Just need a little more and it’s gone.

  • Ovadia

And Descalso flies out to right. Two runners stranded in two innings.

  • Ovadia

One out for Lynn in the second.

  • Ovadia

    Base hit for Blackman.

  • Ovadia

End of the second. Although he has given up a run, Lynn has been very efficient so far: 23 pitches through 2 innings.

  • Ovadia

    And Lynn goes down.

  • Ovadia

And now Carp is hurting somehow. Took a ball off the ankle. Now he’s back in the box.

  • Ovadia

And now he just misses that one. Cuddyer goes and gets it.

  • Ovadia

And Jay tried to drive that one beyond Blackman, but just missed it. 1-2-3 go the Cardinals.

  • Ovadia

One on for Lynn, one out.

  • Ovadia

    Lynn Ks Tullo.

  • Ovadia

And there’s the inning. Let’s go heart of this lineup. Do some real hitting here.

  • Ovadia

    Holliday grounds out, one down.

  • Ovadia

And Freese tied it up at one.

  • Ovadia

Nice catch by Jon Jay! Spectacular!

  • Mike King

I see the bats are still very silent.

    • Ovadia

      Very. Sort of sad.

      • Mike King

        Yadi coming thru again.

        • Ovadia

That was absolutely absurd. I love it.

    • Ovadia

But Lynn is still looking pretty good.

  • Mike King

All right lets wake up these bats and capture first alone again.

  • Ovadia

    Thanks for coming out, Mike.

    • Mike King

Was working earlier, so could not chat. So thought I would check in for a couple of innings.

      • Ovadia

I appreciate it. I get lonely sometimes.

  • Mike King

So have you heard anything on Craig?

    • Ovadia

He’s in St. Louis. Not travelling. I’d guess we see him when we get back to Missouri.

      • Mike King

Got my fingers crossed. Obviously we see how important he is to our offense.

  • Ovadia

    Jay’s on.

    • Mike King

Matt took care of that, again.

  • Ovadia

    Rally: killed.

  • Mike King

All right once we get Craig back here is how I would like to see the lineup. Carp, Beltran, Craig, Yadi, Holliday, Freese, Jay SS and pitcher. I know it wont happen, but I am so tired of Holliday killing rallies in the 3 hole.

    • Ovadia

      Agreed.

  • Mike King

Ok so this is 2 good outings in a row for Lynn. Maybe he finally figured something out?

  • Mike King

I have not noticed, does MM have the pen up and going?

    • Ovadia

I don’t think so . . . I would guess when there are two outs.

      • Mike King

This is why I would have had them up and going in the 7th and he was at 100 pitches. This way you could go get him now and let him go out again on a very positive note.

        • Ovadia

Well, maybe start someone now and give him this hitter.

        • Mike King

Oh yea, we need the win and only 2 weeks left as well. :)

          • Mike King

            Like I said…

  • Ovadia

Ok, now we worry. Lilloquist needs to go talk to him now, before he freaks out.

    • Ovadia

And give Maness a minute. And there goes Matheny!

    • Mike King

      One hitter to late.

  • Ovadia

And here comes Siegrist. Let’s go get ‘em.

  • Ovadia

2-1 Rockies. This stuff has to stop now.

    • Mike King

      That is completely on MM.

  • Mike King

Like I said. This one is on poor management.

  • Mike King

Thanks MM for putting us behind.

  • Mike King

By the way once hot stove starts, we are going to have to talk about this team building a bench that can hit. We have the starters except SS, but need 2 good sticks off the bench.

    • Ovadia

Agreed. Not a lot out there, however. Unless you could pick up a Michael Young for cheap.

      • Mike King

Assuming they are going to keep Beltran, the first month both Wong and Taveras are going to have to start at AAA again. Wong is clearly way over matched up here.

        • Ovadia

He also hasn’t had the at bats to prove that yet. I dunno, I think Wong can hit.

          • Mike King

I am not saying he is a flop, but he is clearly needing some more time working things out.

          • Ovadia

I agree, I just would hope that he gets that figured out during the spring.

    • Ovadia

Of course, you could go looking for a CF and let Wong play second while moving Carp to 3rd. Then you’d be looking at some combination of Jay, Adams, Craig, Freese, and Taveras off the bench, depending on who starts. I don’t mind that idea. Especially if Aledmys Diaz came reasonably cheaply as a SS option.

      • Mike King

I think they resign Beltran myself. I can see them letting Taveras start out the first month or two at AAA getting his stick going with at bats every day and without the pressure. Keep Shane during that time frame. Then as soon as you see he is ready to go, bring him up and platoon him in CF with Jay. Same thing with Wong for me. I let him start out at AAA and then move him up again when he appears ready.

  • Mike King

    Can Carp do it again?

    • Ovadia

Of course he can. He’s super Carp!!!

  • Ovadia

    There he goes!

    • Mike King

LIke having that guy on our team.

  • Ovadia

So, I did a little research on pitch framing. It may be possible that sabermetrically Yadi gives us an extra 10 wins a year.

    • Mike King

The ump tonight is consistant. He rung up Wong and the Rockie on the same pitch. They both were slightly outside. That is all I ask for.

  • Mike King

Well i am out after this half inning, early day tomorrow. Hate the west coast games!

    • Mike King

Never mind, out now. See ya tomorrow.

      • Ovadia

Have a good night, Mike. Thanks for coming out.

  • Ovadia

No body can get it done tonight. Where did our bullpen go?

  • Ovadia

Just doesn’t seem like the Cardinals can overtake the Pirates. Maybe they pull it out miraculously in the ninth.

  • Ovadia

Ugly hack from Adams. Molina’s on second.
