Pirates at Cardinals, Game 141 Thread

The only good thing about last night’s loss was that the Cardinals got leave when they were done.

Otherwise, it was painfully ugly. We had to watch a pitcher who can pitch fail, and watch a very competent offense continue to struggle.

Luckily, tonight should be a good day.

The number one good thing is that the Cardinals are finally back home in St. Louis, where they’re 41-25 as opposed to 39-35 on the road.

The number two good thing is that Joe Kelly is pitching and the Cardinals literally can’t lose with him on the mound.

Sadly, the Cardinals’ offense still has to take on A.J. Burnett.

I don’t need to remind you all of how important this series against the Pirates is, and we could definitely use a sweep right now. Or even a series win. Luckily, after we take on the Pirates, we get a little bit of a breather, leaving plenty of room to hope for a Pittsburgh self-destruct sequence while we coast through our easy end of September.

At least so I hope. In the meantime, let’s take on the Pirates!

  • Ovadia

Hey! Welcome to tonight’s game thread!

  • Ovadia

    Here we go!

  • Ovadia

And there’s a way to start! Way to be Kelly!

  • Ovadia

Nice effort by Holliday, at least he stopped it and fired it in.

  • Ovadia

Descalso’s range is driving me crazy.

  • Ovadia

Jay, on the other hand, seems to get to balls that look like two-run doubles.

  • Ovadia

At least Freese stopped the ball. Error, but no runs.

  • Ovadia

Let’s see how Kelly handles this.

  • Ovadia

Out of the inning! That said, I’m tired of these first inning bases loaded jams. THAT said, I feel much more confident in Kelly’s ability to handle himself.

  • Mike King

Hey there. Sorry for not being around, been out of town with the family.

    • Ovadia

Not a problem! Glad to have you tonight. :)

  • Ovadia

And Carp draws a walk! Let’s go Cards.

  • Ovadia

And Jay gets a sneaky little base hit and Carp goes to third!

  • Mike King

Big situation here for the Cards already.

    • Ovadia

A lead would feel so great.

      • Mike King

And Matt looks awful at the plate.

        • Ovadia

Someone needs to get him to level out that swing.

          • Mike King

Beltran and McCutch saving the Cards season potentially

  • Ovadia

    And Holliday down swinging. Shoot.

  • Ovadia

And Jay just gets in there! Now we need a hit, Carlos.

  • Ovadia

OH MY GOODNESS!!! Let’s go Cardinals. Where’s that crazy good defense from McCutchen when you need it?!?!?!?!

  • Ovadia

Molina needs to get going, too.

  • Ovadia

I don’t blame him at all, but Molina doesn’t have a “run” speed. A slow jog is about as fast as he gets.

    • Mike King

I don’t mind the jog from him, he has to save his knees behind the plate.

      • Ovadia

I agree entirely. I caught when I was fifteen, and that killed my knees. I can’t imagine doing it at thirty.

  • Ovadia

If I ever have to pitch to Matt Adams, I’m pitching him away all day long; he still can’t send the ball the other way. That’s his only offensive hole right now.

    • Mike King

      That and in the dirt.

  • Ovadia

    As he goes down swinging.

  • Ovadia

Descalso is driving me insane. He’s almost as bad as Ryan Jackson, but not quite.

    • Mike King

If he is on the team next year, i am officially protesting.

      • Ovadia

I don’t mind having him on the team, but he can not play short.

  • Mike King

I did not get to see Wacha the other day. Obviously he pitched really well. Can you give me some insight on the outing.

    • Ovadia

He should have stayed in. He looked really good. I thought his curve looked a little bit better, but he changed speeds really well and was calm. Most importantly, he looked confident.

      • Mike King

        when did he get pulled?

        • Ovadia

After 6. He was being very efficient and had only thrown 80 pitches.

          • Mike King

            Ughhhhh

  • Ovadia

    And Descalso half redeemed himself.

    • Mike King

Horrible footwork to begin with from him, but he did make the play.

      • Ovadia

Can’t blame him much for not being a shortstop.

  • Ovadia

And Kelly gets another K! He looks awfully sharp.

    • Mike King

Except given up 4 hits in 2 innings.

      • Ovadia

Well, yeah . . . but Kelly always does that. That is Kelly’s sharp. It’s when he doesn’t get out of jams that we worry.

  • Mike King

I find it interesting as good as this organization has been at building from within, they just cannot do anything with SS at any level.

    • Ovadia

I know. We need to go get one. There’s no other choice. We can’t sit and wait for that guy in A- to develop, because there’s no guy in A-.

      • Mike King

I am all for paying the PED guy from Detroit.

        • Ovadia

He should be cheap because of the PEDs. If he truly is reformed, he could be ok.

          • Mike King

God knows he would be an improvement over what we have.

          • Mike King

But then again, so might a blind man in a wheel chair.

  • Ovadia

And Kelly goes down. Not bad wood, though.

    • Mike King

Looked better than Freese, Adams and Holliday

      • Ovadia

        I still trust Adams.

        • Mike King

I trust him and Holliday. Just saying how bad the 3 of them looked at the first at bat.

  • Mike King

So while we are sitting here, lets talk about the rotation for next year. Waino, Garcia, Kelly, Miller and Wacha? Is Lynn trade bait this off season? Maybe him and Freese packaged for a good SS?

    • Ovadia

Imma eat dinner. I’ll get back to you in a second.

      • Mike King

        Enjoy

    • Ovadia

Lynn could be a nice option for trade bait, but I’m not sold. Does he get a rotation spot? I don’t think so, but maybe he’s not done yet. And I don’t know if anyone would take him.

I think that Waino, Kelly, and Miller are locks for the rotation. Garcia gets a shot, at least, but we’ll have to see how he pitches. A bad spring or rough start could mess him up.

I think that Wacha probably gets a spot. But Lyons and Siegrist could be options too.

      • Mike King

This is why I could see them package Lynn with a Freese like player to upgrade at SS.

  • Ovadia

Carp. What a beast. I’m doing a post about the fact that he should be MVP. Legitimately. Especially if he keeps this up.

    • Mike King

See what happens when I come back?

      • Ovadia

Don’t ever go on vacation again.

        • Mike King

Jay just tweeted me he is paying me not to vacation. LOL

  • Ovadia

Jay has his argyle socks on! I want those.

  • Ovadia

    Come on, Holliday!

  • Riley

I totally agree that Matt C. should be MVP. He is awesome!

    • Mike King

      Welcome!

    • Ovadia

Generally, it’s thought that it will be McCutchen, Yadier, Kershaw, Goldschmidt, or Votto, but Carp has the most hits and runs in the NL, and has pretty good BA, OBP, and RBI numbers. He ought to get a lot of consideration.

  • Ovadia

    There we go!

  • Riley

Now we’re looking like the Cardinals I know.

  • Ovadia

It hurts so much when the team that can do this, doesn’t.

  • Riley

    They’re just pounding AJ Burnett

  • Ovadia

    Just keeps comin’!

  • Mike King

As bad as they have looked, they can get hot these final 3 weeks, win the division and go into the playoffs hot…

    • Ovadia

’bout time they do that, too. Sweep the Pirates for a start?

  • Mike King

Why would Yadi slide into first with his knees? I cringed!

    • Ovadia

      I agree.

  • Ovadia

And Molina still can’t get there. That’s nearly funny.

  • Mike King

LOL at Adams. Wow could have looked worst with those 2 at bats?

    • Ovadia

      Not much.

  • Mike King

And Freese makes another easy out…

  • Ovadia

Oh well, at least we’re winning. By a lot.

  • Ovadia

Kelly has just been so good.

    • Mike King

Given up a lot of hits, but most are ground balls. Love that!

  • Ovadia

Not quite doubled up. Oh well, 2 down, now we work out of it.

  • Ovadia

I like getting into the bullpen by the fourth inning. It makes me happy.

  • Ovadia

I want Greg Garcia. And I actually miss Pete Kozma. At least he could draw some walks and play defense.

    • Mike King

I think Ozzie at current age would be a better option.

      • Ovadia

Maybe no back flips, but he could still somersault, right?

        • Mike King

No way, if he gets hurt doing that we are back to these losers.

  • Mike King

What the hell Carp? You made an out? That is it your playing SS. LOL

    • Ovadia

I’ve actually wondered about trying to move Carp or Wong to short. At least for the end of this season.

      • Mike King

Neither has any experience there. Would be a disaster defensively. Worst than DD if you can imagine.

        • Ovadia

I find that nearly impossible to believe. And Carp can play every other position, why not there? He was seen taking balls there at one point.

  • Mike King

Ok so over under Waino pulls out of this funk tomorrow?

    • Ovadia

Over. Waino is lights out. If he was tipping pitches the way he says he was, then he should be back to normal. Also, what the Reds may have discovered, they aren’t sharing with the Bucs. So even if he was tipping, there’s no reason to think that Pittsburgh has picked up on it yet.

  • Ovadia

Nice play by Descalso, but why didn’t he go to second. Might not have turned two, but McCutch would have been meat.

  • Mike King

I hate DD. I get it 5-0 lead, but he had an easy out at 2nd.
