Cardinals at Pirates, Game 135 Thread

Scott Rovak-USA TODAY Sports

Well, after Liriano dealt with the Cardinals last night, there is yet another tie on top of the NL Central. Tonight, the Cardinals have a chance to regain their one game lead behind Lance Lynn.

Although Lynn has had a tough season, posting a 4.02 ERA, the ample run support he receives from the offense (5.41 runs per game, on average) has led him to a 13-8 record.

A.J. Burnett, Lynn’s counter part, has been good this year (3.18 ERA), but only has a 6-9 record due to the awful run support he gets (3.42 runs per game). He’s done well against St. Louis, going 2-1 with a 2.96 ERA, but his last outing was a little shaky, where he gave up 5 earned runs in just 4.1 innings.

In addition, Kolten Wong gets a start a second base tonight while Freese gets a night off. It’s always exciting to see how rookies handle themselves, and I have been particularly excited about him, so it’s good to see him getting a chance.

Tonight, the Cardinals will seek to fend off Pittsburgh and even up the series, while regaining the division lead. Let’s hope that Burnett serves up a repeat performance and the Cardinals can stop their little two game skid.

    Alright! Let’s go Cardinals!!!

  • Ovadia

I’d like to have a base runner in the first inning. Someday. Just a dream of mine.

  • Ovadia

Holliday just misses it . . . 1-2-3 inning for the Cardinals. I’ve been saying that way too many times lately.

  • Ovadia

    3 pitch K. I like it.

  • Ovadia

    And a base hit.

  • Ovadia

Well, Morneau may be a dangerous player, but he’s stunk against the Cardinals, going 1-9 for a .111 batting average. That one hit was a home run, but hopefully he won’t handle the Redbirds well.

  • Ovadia

And Lynn rings up another one!

  • Ovadia

And that’s the inning! We get out of the first without giving up a run for the first time in three games. Woo!

  • Ovadia

    Let’s go Craig!

  • Ovadia

And there’s a lead off base runner! Tonight already looks better.

  • Ovadia

Alright Jon Jay, let’s keep this going.

  • Ovadia

And Jay gets robbed, hits into a double play. No ball hit that hard should be an out.

  • Ovadia

Byrd doubles to lead off the inning. He’ll be a Cardinal killer this post season; count on it.

  • Ovadia

Byrd advances on an out. Now Lynn needs to leave him on third base.

  • Ovadia

Nice play by Carpenter! Two down, no runs for Pirates!

  • Ovadia

A.J. Burnett drives in the run for the Pirates. Stupid pitcher.

  • Ovadia

Another hit and another run. 2-0 Pittsburgh. Lynn can’t do this right now.

  • Ovadia

A wild pitch, a walk, bases loaded.

  • Ovadia

    Lynn . . . if you walk him . . .

  • Ovadia

Foul ball, we’ll do it again.

  • Ovadia

Popped him up! McCutchen is 0-4 with the bases loaded and two outs in his career.

  • Ovadia

Let’s go Wong! First career home run. Let’s see it. Right now. Light a fire under the Cardinals.

  • Ovadia

And a base hit for Wong!

  • Riley

Lynn looks like his usual suspect self. I hope that was his big inning. Here’s hoping he settles down and the Cardinals get some runs!!

    • Ovadia

      Yessir!

  • Ovadia

And Lynn goes down looking. Oh well.

  • Ovadia

Have you been following the game threads?

  • Riley

    Yes and yay a run!!

    • Ovadia

Glad to hear that you’re watching (and now commenting!). If you have any ideas on how to make it better, let me know. :) Welcome to the fun.

  • Ovadia

    Nice. Let’s get another!

  • Ovadia

Am I the only person who feels like Holliday swings down on the ball?

    • Ovadia

46.8% ground balls. I think he does swing down on the ball.

  • Riley

No that was a terrible swing and miss!

  • Ovadia

    That was an effort.

  • Ovadia

I do not like Marlon Byrd.

  • Riley

    Lynn has got to go

  • Ovadia

Right this minute. This is atrocious. St. Louis is simply bad in Pittsburgh. We definitely can’t afford to do this crap in the playoffs.

  • Ovadia

    Hey, an out.

  • Ovadia

The Cardinals need to come back in this one, just to remind themselves that they can win games, even against the Pirates.

  • Ovadia

And another run. I don’t know why Beltran dropped that . . .

  • Ovadia

Lynn is lucky that McCutchen didn’t hammer that 1-0 pitch.

  • Riley

I can’t watch this. The wheels have definitely fallen off. Is he just going to leave Lynn in to eat up innings? I know we don’t want to use up the bull pen but…

  • Ovadia

Let’s hope we hit to the pitcher’s spot and he pulls him.

  • Ovadia

And Lynn’s still throwing them to the backstop.

  • Ovadia

Oh no . . . it’s Byrd again. Everyone cover your eyes.

  • Ovadia

Hell of a play by Wong, just missed him.

  • Ovadia

And Lynn gets through an inning without giving up a run.

  • Ovadia

3-1 to Wong, let’s see what he does with a hitters’ count!

  • Ovadia

    Dammit Tabata!

  • Riley

If Lynn comes up to bat I’ll know that Matheny has officially become brain dead.

  • Ovadia

    Hey, Descalso gets a hit!

  • Ovadia

Pete Kozma????? That’s no better. He’s not brain dead, just crazy.

  • Riley

No more Lynn. It was about time
