Cardinals at Pirates, Game 134 Thread

Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

Thanks to Pittsburgh’s loss last night, the Cardinals have regained a full game lead over the Pirates.

Of course, that could all be erased tonight.

The Cardinals are back on the road, this time heading to PNC Park to take on the struggling Pirates.

Pittsburgh is just returning from a long road trip where they dropped 5 of 10. August has been their worst month thus far, as they have played to a 12-14 record.

The Cardinals, on the other hand, have been very good recently (barring the unspeakable Wednesday night disaster), going 16-11 in the month of August, and 7-3 in their last 10 games.

Behind Shelby Miller, the Cardinals will attempt to open up the series with a win against Francisco Liriano tonight. Although Liriano has been a better pitcher than Shelby this season, going 14-6 with a 2.74 ERA, he’s had a rough August, posting a 4.60 ERA and giving up 4 or more runs in 4 or fewer innings twice already this month.

Miller has been much better in August, posting a 3.47 ERA, and was phenomenal during his last outing, pitching seven innings of three-hit ball and giving up just one run.

For this trip to Pittsburgh, St. Louis is bringing its newest weapon: John Axford. Although Axford has struggled this season with a 4.45 ERA, he has been very good in the past (a 2.19 ERA with 70 saves between 2010 and 2011), and John Mozeliak has a knack for acquiring just the right piece at just the right time for just the right price (see Octavio Dotel and Edward Mujica). We’ll see if he’s done it again.

Over the next three days, the Cardinals have a golden opportunity to really run away with the NL Central division. Let’s hope they do!

Shelby strikes out Alvarez, 3rd on the night.

Byrd hits one off the wall. I still don’t like him.

  • Ovadia

Little bloop base hit, and Jones has another RBI. 5-0 Pittsburgh. I don’t like Garret Jones either.

  • Ovadia

And Shelby walks him. Miller is done.

  • Ovadia

Almost a double play, but good effort by Freeman.

  • Ovadia

Wait . . . I thought he was out. But Pete missed the bag.

  • Ovadia

    Got it that time.

  • Ovadia

    Alright, Cards, get after Liriano!

You guys can throw up 5 runs in an inning like it’s nothing.

At least he gets ground balls.

Wow. Good effort by both Freeman and Craig.

  • Ovadia

And Freeman doesn’t want to be pulled from this game.

  • Ovadia

And Freeman strikes out McCutchen after being hit in the shoulder.

  • Ovadia

And Freeman gets ‘em out of the inning. Onto the seventh! Only down 5.

Yadi bounces into an out. Liriano continues to handle the Cards.

  • Ovadia

Freese, one more pitch, one more out.

  • Ovadia

Robinson didn’t hustle, and now he’s out. I love how hard Liriano has to work for his outs.

  • Ovadia

And here comes Salas. The game is effectively over.

  • Ovadia

    Salas rings him up!

  • Ovadia

Freese snares the line drive. Pirates go 1-2-3. Onto the eighth,

Pete is retired. At least he made Liriano throw a few. Now let’s see if Kolten can hit Francisco.

  • Ovadia

Answer: almost, but not quite. And another first pitch out.

  • Ovadia

And Carp is retired. Two hits against Liriano. No runs. Just one more inning (I’m assuming that there won’t be a bottom to the ninth.

  • Ovadia

And Choate handles the eighth. Last chance for the Cardinals.

  • Ovadia

    The shift handles Beltran.

  • Ovadia

Holliday has a hit. There is still hope! Sort of.

  • Ovadia

Craig gets a base hit! Two hits in an inning! That’s as many as the Cardinals had in the first eight.

  • Ovadia

Come on Cards, show us your mettle!

  • Ovadia

Nope. Double play. Now it’s over. Pirates and Cardinals share the first place position.

    Until tomorrow.

    Have a good night!
