Cincinnati Reds at St. Louis Cardinals Game Thread – 08/27/2013

Tonight, we’re going to try something new. It’s called a “game thread.”

For those of you who don’t know what that is, don’t be scared! I promise it won’t hurt, and it even has the potential to be a lot of fun.

It works like this:

1. I write a little blurb about the upcoming game for you to read.

2. You read it, and proceed to watch the game (hopefully) a little bit more informed.

3. We all make comments about the game during the game in the comment section below the article.  Talk about whatever you want in real-time.

Ultimately, the idea is to give poor people (like myself) who live too far away from St. Louis to have any other friends watching the game an opportunity to discourse with other Cardinal fans. So if you’re missing a good conversation about the Cards, look no further!

This is an experiment: for the next two months (because the Cardinals will be playing through October), we’ll have a thread for every game. If it goes well, we’ll continue it next year! So if you like the idea, please comment!

Now for part 1:

Tonight, the Cardinals’ other other ace, Joe Kelly, takes the mound against Cincinnati’s Matt Latos. The match up looks to be a good one.

Kelly has been phenomenal this season, pitching to a 5-3 record with a 3.01 ERA. Since earning a permanent spot in the rotation, he’s posted a 2.06 ERA while going 5-0. And he keeps getting better: since the All-Star Break, he’s had a 1.80 ERA and a 4-0 record. He has pitched better than any other Cardinal starter since the break.

Latos has been outstanding as well. This season, he has a 13-4 record and a 2.93 ERA. Much like his counterpart, Latos has been phenomenal since the break, going 5-1 with a stellar 1.47 ERA. In the month of August his ERA drops to 0.89.

Kelly has been good thus far, but Latos has been better. That said, the Cardinals are on a hot streak and it looks like they may be unstoppable. If Kelly can match Latos for six or seven innings, then St. Louis has a very legitimate shot at winning this game.

Alright, now for part three: leave your comments below and enjoy the game! Go Cards!!!

Did Hrabosky just say that only nine pitchers have ever struck out 200 in a season?

    • Ovadia

Or was he talking about pitchers striking out?

I am on brewers game right now so not sure.

  • Ovadia

    On to the eighth!

  • Mike King

    NICE!

  • Mike King

LOL a change up at 86.

    • Ovadia

That’s my fastball. Well, 56 might be my fastball, but hey. You get the point.

      • Mike King

All I was thinking was Bob Forsch hoped for an 86 mph fast ball.

  • Ovadia

Rosenthal from 3-0 to a K. The difference? A trip to the mound from Yadi.

    • Mike King

But he is not the MVP don’t you know.

      • Ovadia

No. Of course not. Really not even the leading MVP candidate this year.

  • @RPKraemer

Doesn’t it feel like forever ago when Ludwick was a Cardinal?

    • Ovadia

Yes. When was it in reality?

      • @RPKraemer

        2010

    • Mike King

      Who? Kidding

    • Ovadia

      2010? Wow. I would’ve guessed like 2007-2008.

  • Ovadia

Pirates have to finish 4-28 to wind up below .500. I think they should.

  • Ovadia

    That has GOT to hurt!

  • @RPKraemer

and down goes Big Matt for a 2nd time.

  • Ovadia

And now he gets hit. Rough.

  • @RPKraemer

That is the last guy I would want to hit. Simon has some major stones.

  • @RPKraemer

I’d say the Reds are about 1 more hit batsman away from getting a little payback. Simon living on the inside half of the batters box.

    • Ovadia

Agreed. Maybe Mook’s tight back’ll effect his control.

  • Ovadia

And Yadi gets his hit for the day.

  • Mike King

You know this is either a K or DP.

    • @RPKraemer

      or a single.

  • Ovadia

    Freese delivers!!!

    • Mike King

OMG lightening just hit near me. LOL

  • @RPKraemer

Cue up the Tweezer Reprise . . . Won’t you step into the Freeser!!!

  • @RPKraemer

I am playing Allken Craig’s walkup music in hopes that some kind of good luck transfers over to DD for this bases loaded AB.

  • Ovadia

Jay walks. Alright DD! Let’s go.
