In what was a very strange event, St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny was ejected following the Cardinals 3-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

Matheny was out there after the game ended to argue with home plate umpire Dan Bellino. Matheny wasn’t arguing Alfonso Soriano‘s catch that ended the game. Rather, he was upset that Bellino took off his mask when Matt Adams said something after a called third strike for the first out in the ninth inning.

There was bad news for the Cardinals in the fourth inning. Left fielder Matt Holliday exited the ballgame as a result of running out a ground ball. Holliday felt tightness in his right hamstring. With the All-Star break coming up, he will have some extra days off.

The Chicago Cubs pitching limited the Cardinals to only four hits. Allen Craig managed to get two hits. David Freese and Jon Jay also managed to get on base by way of a hit. Freese had a double.

Jake Westbrook started for the Cardinals and pitched 7 innings. He allowed 7 hits, 3 runs, 4 walks, and struck out 2 batters.

Pitching in relief, Randy Choate pitched one inning and struck out one batter.

The Cardinals send Joe Kelly (0-3, 4.15 ERA) to start against Carlos Villanueva (2-4, 3.63 ERA) for an afternoon game at Wrigley Field. Outside of the Fox Sports Midwest viewing area, fans can tune in nationally to watch on WGN. Saturday’s game will be regionally televised on Fox while ESPN has tabbed Sunday’s game for Sunday Night Baseball. Lance Lynn and Adam Wainwright will be the other starting pitchers this weekend.
