Descalso must really like playing at PetCo Park. In his career, he has a line of .429/.478/.714 with 1 home run and 7 RBI.

Starting pitcher Adam Wainwright pitched 7.1 innings and moved to 6-3 this season with a 2.38 ERA. He allowed 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, and struck out 6.

Carlos Martinez pitched 1.2 innings of mop-up duty to close out the game. He allowed 3 hits, 1 run, and 1 walk.

In the third inning, second baseman Matt Carpenter doubled in Descalso to tie the game at 1 run a piece.

The Cardinals heated up in the 5th inning when they spotted the Padres for four runs. Descalso got the action started early with a double that scored Jon Jay. Carlos Beltran had a 2-run single that scored Descalso and Pete Kozma. Allen Craig hit a ground-rule double that scored Beltran.

Descalso’s grand slam in the 8th inning scored Matt Holliday, Craig, and Jay.

The Cardinals were not done yet. In the top of the 9th inning, Holliday’s sac fly scored Carpenter.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Jaime Garcia is out for the rest of the 2013 season.
