Daily Rant: Cardinals can’t strike against White Sox pitching

The Cardinals faced the White Sox in the first game of their three game set last night and the results were not what the team wanted. Even though the Cardinals put ten hits up in five innings against the Sox rookie starter, they couldn’t get hits with runners on. Adam Wainwright pitched a solid seven innings, but was still saddled with the loss in a 6-1 game. More details follow after the jump.

The Positives

  • Yadier Molina picked up his fifteenth double of the season in a one hit night.
  • Carlos Beltran also picked up a hit and brought his average up to .289.
  • Matt Holliday, Allen Craig, David Freese, and Tyler Greene all had two hit nights, with Craig driving in the team’s only run.
  • Adam Wainwright pitched seven solid innings, only allowing seven base runners while striking out seven and allowing two earned runs. He is still in this Jekyll and Hyde mode where you can’t tell if you’ll get a good start or not.

Justin’s Jeers

  • The Cardinals left twelve runners stranded. You normally won’t win a game with that many men left on.
  • Not a single hitter took a walk. The Cardinals tend to lose games when they aren’t showing patience at the plate.
  • Rafael Furcal and Shane Robinson were held hitless. Furcal’s average is now below .300
  • Marc Rzepczynski and Mitchell Boggs didn’t offer much relief for the team, allowing four earned runs in their combined inning of work. Their efforts put the game completely out of reach.

Three Stars

3) David Freese – A two hit night was wasted by a corps that couldn’t hit with runners on base.

2) Matt Holliday – Also had a two hit night and scored the team’s only run.

1) Allen Craig – Joined the two hit party and drove in Holliday for the sole run of the game.

Today’s Game

The Cardinals hope to even the series with the White Sox today as they send out 9-2 Lance Lynn against 6-1 Jake Peavy. Lynn has a 2.66 ERA and is hoping to become the first ten game winner in the majors. Peavy currently sports a 3.05 ERA. Game time is set for 7:15.

They had 11 hits, there just is no clutch hitting, One thing I believe is just crazy is Yadie batting in the 2 hole the last 2 game. Yes he has the best average but what is Matheny thinking?  Your taking the best 6 hole hitter out of his comfort zone and throwing him into the hot seat. Its a totally different mind set and he will get very different pitches to hit. Keep him where he has always hit best.. That is not negotiable !    There are others Matheny can put in the 2 hole ..
Other then that, it really does not matter, this offence can produce, when JJ is back IF he is EVER back will be a great addition..

The real issue is the bull pen. Its starting to look worse then last year and that includes are so called closer in Motte. When we gave away Perez that was a hugh mistake.. Banking on Motte over Perez..
Ok thats a done deal. Now Mo must get off his ass and make some moves with his pitching.
Even Lynn who is really doing well, will NOT hold up a full season.. We still have no idea when Carp may be back., its now the middle  of June and we are dropping down slowly. We need a stoper.
With Garcia out  “who never has really been more the a 5th pitcher” , they need help and not from the minors.. I see there waiting to see the outcome of Carp and others but .We need innings eaters and pen help ASAP..
We also may need a real replacement for JJ not knowing if he will even be back. There is never any news on his injury and how serious it must be..
