Daily Rant: Cardinals can’t strike against White Sox pitching

facebooktwitterreddit

The Cardinals faced the White Sox in the first game of their three game set last night and the results were not what the team wanted. Even though the Cardinals put ten hits up in five innings against the Sox rookie starter, they couldn’t get hits with runners on. Adam Wainwright pitched a solid seven innings, but was still saddled with the loss in a 6-1 game. More details follow after the jump.

The Positives

  • Yadier Molina picked up his fifteenth double of the season in a one hit night.
  • Carlos Beltran also picked up a hit and brought his average up to .289.
  • Matt Holliday, Allen Craig, David Freese, and Tyler Greene all had two hit nights, with Craig driving in the team’s only run.
  • Adam Wainwright pitched seven solid innings, only allowing seven base runners while striking out seven and allowing two earned runs. He is still in this Jekyll and Hyde mode where you can’t tell if you’ll get a good start or not.

Justin’s Jeers

  • The Cardinals left twelve runners stranded. You normally won’t win a game with that many men left on.
  • Not a single hitter took a walk. The Cardinals tend to lose games when they aren’t showing patience at the plate.
  • Rafael Furcal and Shane Robinson were held hitless. Furcal’s average is now below .300
  • Marc Rzepczynski and Mitchell Boggs didn’t offer much relief for the team, allowing four earned runs in their combined inning of work. Their efforts put the game completely out of reach.

Three Stars

3) David Freese – A two hit night was wasted by a corps that couldn’t hit with runners on base.

2) Matt Holliday – Also had a two hit night and scored the team’s only run.

1) Allen Craig – Joined the two hit party and drove in Holliday for the sole run of the game.
