Cardinals Madness! Match-ups 3 and 4

facebooktwitterreddit

Starting today, I’m going to put these match-ups in pairs with an eye towards finishing a March Madness style tournament in March. Strange concept, but we’ll see how it goes. Today will see the 9th seed 1964 team take on the 24th seed 2006 team and the 8th seed 1982 team against the 25th seed 1928 team. As always, team details follow after the jump.

1964

The 1964 season was the beginning of a new era for the Cardinals. Stan Musial had just retired in the offseason, leaving the Cardinals without their star player. Enter Lou Brock. In June, the Cardinals engineered the now famous “Brock for Broglio” trade that sent out a relatively good pitcher in Ernie Broglio for what appeared to be a decent outfielder in Lou Brock, among others involved in the trade. You all know the rest. Broglio started only 32 games after the trade to the Cubs and Brock became a Hall of Famer. Bob Gibson was the only other Hall of Famer on this Cardinals team. The team also featured 1964 league MVP Ken Boyer and Gold Glovers Curt Flood, Bobby Schulz, and Bill White. The 1964 Cardinals went 93-69 and beat the Yankees in seven games to take the World Series.

2006

The 2006 season is still fresh in the minds of Cardinals fans. After a very slow start in the new Busch Stadium, the Cardinals played well enough to win the division, but were looked at as the weakest team in the playoffs after backing into the playoffs despite poor play. The Cardinals defeated the Padres and Mets en route to beating the Tigers in five games to capture the World Series. This season saw the debut of future ace Adam Wainwright.

Redbird Nation…

1982

The 1982 season was the first as a Cardinal for Ozzie Smith. The Cardinals sent Sixto Lezcano, Garry Templeton, and Luis DeLeon to the Padres for Ozzie, Steve Mura, and Al Olmstead. Ozzie obviously went on to become a Hall of Fame shortstop who manned the position for the Cardinals for the next fifteen years. The team featured another future Hall of Famer in relief pitcher Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuce Sutter. The 82 Redbirds went 92-70 and defeated the Brewers in seven games to win the World Series

1928

The ’28 Cardinals led the division with a 95-59 record, but lost to the Yankees in four games in the World Series. The team featured league MVP “Sunny Jim” Bottomley, as well as future Hall of Famers Bottomley, Pete “Grover Cleveland” Alexander, Frankie Frisch, Chick Hafey, Jesse Haines, and Rabbit Maranville.
