In what turned out to be the most thrilling I-70 series since the 80’s, the Cardinals won Sunday afternoon 9-8 in 10 innings. The Royals came out to a quick start this season and were absolutely shocking everyone with how well they were playing. They have since cooled off and settled into third place behind the Cleveland Indians (best team in baseball) and the .500 Tigers.

Matt Holliday and Lance Berkman returned in this series. Holliday played DH for the games and Lance Berkman was back in right field for Sunday. Word on the Cardinals official Injury Report lists Holliday as day to day now and has his return to the field slated for maybe Wednesday, May 25 after re-aggravating his quadriceps injury over the weekend in his DH spot.

In another blow, we witnessed Gerald Laird go done on a painful pitch that skipped under his bat and went on to break his right index finger. His return day is up in the air at this point. In lieu of his temporary departure, the Cardinals have decided to call up catcher Tony Cruz from the Memphis Redbirds to take his place as backup catcher for the time being.

Tony Cruz was born and raised in the Cardinals Spring Training home of Palm Beach, Florida and is even listed as being drafted out of Palm Beach Community College. He is 24 years of age and was the 802nd overall pick in the 26th round of the 2007 MLB Draft.

In other moves made just today, Skip Schumaker came off the 15 day DL and Mitchell Boggs (thought by some as the next closer) has been optioned back to Memphis to be a Redbird.
